Jessica in Bothell Hi, Eva! Thanks for all you do in our community. I'm going into surgery later this morning, and I'm feeling a little sad and nervous. Do you have any songs for helping people feel braver or more hopeful? I could use some of that this morning, and I often find it here.

Comeback Kid was the first single released from Sharon's 2019 album, 'Remind Me Tomorrow'. Writing while pregnant and studying psychology, Van Etten shelved her guitar and mapped out her demos on piano, organ, and synthesizer. The result was one of her catchiest songs to date.

Director William Turner says about the video, “The visuals draw from Sharon’s personal archive of photos and videos as the narrative of the song looks back on her past. The elements are then reactivated by an undercurrent of abstract animations. These sequences are also used to frame and obscure her performance, suggesting the fractured identity of someone looking at their past, but also confidently facing the future. Sharon is both audience and projectionist of her memories.”: www.youtube.com -- Last summer, KEXP's Drive Time Producer, Rachel Stevens, talked to Sharon Van Etten about what it's like being a parent in music: www.kexp.org

Sharon Van Etten - one of the most prolific songwriters of our time! Drive Time Producer, Rachel Stevens, talked to Sharon Van Etten about what it's like being a parent in music: www.kexp.org "’Comeback Kid’ is about that feeling when you go back home to visit your family and you have those mixed emotions of feeling like that kid again, like you’re always going to be a kid in your parents’ eyes. You walk around in your hometown and run into people you used to know who have in their minds who they think you are. I go home and I’m in the bedroom where I grew up, with all these memories around me, but I’m an adult now. I’ve come very far, but sometimes you get back in that spot and feel like a kid all over again...."

In the video for "Comeback Kid," Sharon Van Etten embraces her rock and roll self as she stands in front of projections of images from her life and projects a fierce look with severe makeup and an intense stare. “As the lyrics for ‘Comeback Kid’ unfolded, I realized I was talking about many selves: the kid, the adult, the sibling, the friend, the neighbor,” explains Van Etten. “I imagined a projector streaming over me of memories, unclear if they are mine or someone else’s, confronted by the disorientation of time and perspective. Jonathan William Turner helped me to convey these struggles of self, forgiveness, and living in the now.” www.youtube.com
