Hey John. I stumbled on your Getting Airplay piece written for KEXP today, and just wanted to reach out and say thanks. NOTE: www.kexp.org I and two friends are part of a small indie band from Melbourne, Australia and are currently in the process of promoting our upcoming single. It's honestly this part of the entire release process that I find the most difficult and often the most disheartening. It often feels like you really have to sell yourself, and at times it can feel so disconnected from the pureness of the songwriting itself. It's obviously an essential part of the process though. And this isn't to say that people owe us, or anyone, the act of checking out music, and furthermore, liking it. But still, it can just suck sometimes. I read your article right in the midst of trying to find a few more people to contact. It was really timely for the headspace I was in. It was so refreshing to just hear someone say (and I'm paraphrasing here), 'it's going to be hard, there's a good chance you won't get seen or heard. Now keep going'. I'm also super appreciative of all the great tips you put in your piece in order to give oneself the best chance to get seen, along with pointing us to some additional resources that might be of use. Unfortunately, this whole process has at times felt like some people want to keep the door closed on new music, rather than embracing it. Your piece reminded me that that's not the case, and to keep working. I (we) love making music and are going to continue to do so. There's nothing else I want to do more. Your piece made me reflect on that even more so. Thank you. I know there's a good chance you won't see this email. And that's cool, that's all part of it! But on the off chance you do, I wish you all the best. If we happen to be the next *insert iconic artist name here* one day, I sincerely hope we get to say hi in person and shout you a drink. Until then, stay safe and all the best. Mitch. peakpark.bandcamp.com
