This infamous track samples a few records; Club Nouveau's "Why You Treat Me So Bad" (1987), Kool and the Gang's "Jungle Boogie" (1973) and Audio Two's "Top Billin'" (1987). Producer Tone Capone: "Yuk and Numskull came to me with the record they wanted to turn into a beat. I knew it already and had the 12in cos I was a DJ. I liked the groove but there was way too much reverb in the mix. The drums were too far back. It didn’t match up with my sound at that time, which was really upfront – I wanted everything in your face. So I slowed down the beat and added bells, voices and scratches." Luniz: "Our slang camouflaged what we were actually saying, and that allowed the song to spread to places it couldn’t have if it was real explicit, like, “Roll up, light up, smoke that weed, kids!” After the song blew up, it became universal – you could put five on anything."

"When you think about the song, though, the part that sticks isn’t the rap verses by Luniz or any of the rappers on the remix like E-40, although they’re all dope. It’s the chorus, and the distinctive refrain that everyone sings: “I got five on it. Messin’ with that indo weed, I got five on it….Partna let’s go half on a sack.” But the man behind that famous hook? He’s feels he’s been nearly erased from the song’s legacy. “I’m one of the people you’re playing in your car all the time!” said that man, Michael Marshall. “I ain’t got nothing from it.” Read the untold story of Michael Marshall: www.theringer.com
