Loretta Lynn wrote this song years before recording it as a duet with Jack White. The song was based on a true event, during a time when Lynn pretended to have a love affair with her guitarist, Cal Smith in order to make her husband Mooney Lynn jealous. -- "And a pitcher to go..." This album was produced by Jack White, he was born on this day in 1975 -- Loretta Lynn had written the music and lyrics to "Portland Oregon" years prior to its recording date. After writing the song, Lynn did not record it for many years until meeting rock artist Jack White. While having dinner at Lynn's house, White came across a pile of handwritten songs, "Portland, Oregon" among them. It was decided that she would record the tune as a duet for her 2004 album Van Lear Rose, which Jack White also produced. On CMT, Jack White said this song was never planned as a duet. "She insisted [on it]. I said, 'All right, let’s do 'Portland, Oregon' together, and we’ll talk to each other at the bar." Watch them performing it on The Late Show with David Letterman here: bit.ly

Evelyn in Snoqualmie requested "Portland, Oregon." -- When Loretta Lynn passed away at age 90 in 2022, Jack White shared: "I said years ago that I thought she was the greatest female singer-songwriter of the 20th century. I still believe that. Loretta used to say to make it in the business, you had to either be great, different, or first, and she thought that she was just different and that’s how she made it, but I think she was all three of those things and there’s plenty of evidence to back that up too." tinyurl.com

Loretta Lynn began with no formal music training but spent hours every day singing her babies to sleep, and was known to churn out fully textured songs in a matter of minutes. Loretta's first ever band, Loretta & the Trailblazers, formed while she was living in Custer, WA and included her brother, Jay Lee Webb. She came to the attention of local record executives while playing local clubs, which led to her signing her very first recording contract with Zero Records in January 1960. She lived in poverty for much of her early life, began having kids by age 17 and spent years married to a man prone to drinking and philandering – all of which became material for her plainspoken songs. Lynn’s life was rich with experiences most country stars of the time hadn’t had for themselves – but her female fans knew them intimately. She was the first female country singer to write a No. 1 hit. Lynn passed away on October 4th, 2022 at 90 years old.

"Portland Oregon" is a song written and recorded by American country singer-songwriter Loretta Lynn. In 2004, she recorded the song as a duet with American rock musician Jack White. Shortly before its recording, White discovered the song on an old paper filed away in Lynn's attic. The song was among several old compositions Lynn recorded for her 2004 studio album, Van Lear Rose. #407 - For the album, Loretta Lynn worked with the core band of guitarist Jack White, drummer Patrick Keeler, bassist Jack Lawrence, and pedal steel guitarist Dave Feeney. The Midwest rock crew turn “Portland, Oregon” into a bluesy romp, with heavy accents balanced by a slow-building instrumental intro. “I didn’t know [Jack] was gonna sing with me on ‘Portland, Oregon,'” says Lynn. “I walked in the studio and I said, ‘Who is that man singing it with me, Jack?’ and he said, ‘That’s me.’ I like Jack. Anything he did I thought was cool.”

The album's title refers to Loretta Lynn's origins as the daughter of a miner working the Van Lear, KY coal mines.
