Originated as an a cappella track on Suzanne Vega's 1987 release "Solitude Standing." It became a hit in 1990 when British production duo DNA added a beat and released the remix as a bootleg. Their remix version was included in the 1991 album of Vega remixes "Tom's Album." The "Tom's Diner" of the song is Tom's Restaurant in New York City, a mid-20th-century diner on the northeast corner of Broadway and West 112th Street. Vega was reputedly a frequent patron during the early 1980s when she was a student at nearby Barnard College. The diner later became famous as the location used for the exterior scenes of Monk's Café in Seinfeld!

DNA was the name taken by English electronic music producers Nick Batt and Neal Slateford, best known for releasing a remix of Suzanne Vega's "Tom's Diner" in 1990. Suzanne Vega wrote her a cappella tune "Tom's Diner" in 1981 during a visit to a diner in her neighborhood, the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The place itself is actually called Tom's Restaurant and would become even more famous as the exterior of the diner frequented by the characters on Seinfeld. - www.songfacts.com
