Curtis Mayfield is one of the most influential musicians behind soul and politically conscious African-American music. He first achieved success and recognition with The Impressions during the civil rights movement of the late 1950s and 1960s, and later worked as a solo artist.

In October, 2017, Lionel Richie secured the rights from Curtis Mayfield's estate to produce a biopic of the musical genius. Mayfield, whose hits included the Superfly soundtrack and “People Get Ready,” died from complications of Type 2 diabetes on Dec. 26, 1999, at the North Fulton Regional Hospital in Roswell, Ga. : thegrapevine.theroot.com

Off his 2nd studio album Roots, this funky hit is the first track off of the project. Also being released on 7" as the A side with "We're A Winner" as the B side. In this album we hear Curtis pushing his orchestration even farther than he did on his debut album "Curtis"

Curtis Mayfield wrote most of his material at a time when that was not the norm for soul performers. He was among the first to speak openly about POC pride and community struggle in his compositions. As a songwriter and a producer, he was a key architect of Chicago soul, penning material and working on sessions by notable Windy City soulsters like Gene Chandler, Jerry Butler, Major Lance, and Billy Butler.
