Billy Preston made "Outa-Space" by using a clavinet, which is a type of electro-mechanical keyboard instrument, and a wah-wah pedal. He then improvised a groove with his backing band before subsequently adding organ and hand claps. The song was called "Outa-Space" because Preston thought it had a spacey sound to it. www.songfacts.com

Playing music that you would have heard on KCMU in 1972 -- kexp.org When Apple went belly up in 1970, A&M Records agreed to sign Billy Preston and allowed him to produce himself. The first album released in 1971 was "I Wrote A Simple Song," which was also the lead single that the record executives were pushing. Preston felt that the instrumental funk of "Outa Space" was better, but it ended up as the B side. The track went on to win Preston a Grammy award in 1972 for Best Pop Instrumental
