Featuring guest host Rachel Stevens on the show! Rachel normally produces Drive Time but is currently stepping in to produce and host KEXP's Sound and Vision podcast while Emily Fox is on maternity leave. (In the meantime, DJ Greta Rose is stepping in and doing a beautiful job producing Drive Time!) The album's lyrical content is inspired by band members Win and William Butler's upbringing in The Woodlands, Texas, a suburb of Houston. According to Win Butler, the album "is neither a love letter to, nor an indictment of, the suburbs – it's a letter from the suburbs."

TGIRF! Thank God It's Remix Friday! Damian Taylor & Arcade Fire remix This one is from the deluxe edition of Arcade Fire's 'The Suburbs.' At the hands of producer/engineer Damian Taylor and the band itself, the LP’s third single “Ready To Start” is extended by three and a half minutes of synths and electro beats that basically turn it into a Depeche Mode song. bit.ly youtu.be

Number 4. The third studio album from Canadian band arcade Fire came out on August 2nd, 2010. Not to put too fine a point on it, but it won Album of the Year at the 2011 Grammy Awards, Best International Album at the 2011 BRIT Awards, Album of the Year at the 2011 Juno Awards, and the 2011 Polaris Music Prize for best Canadian album. (Apparently, others besides KEXP fell in love with it.)

According to Arcade Fire's Win Butler, this song is about stepping outside the boundaries that are already defined. "For me, the feeling of "Ready to Start" came from going to art school and meeting a lot of people who had really defined political ideas and rules about art. But I just wanted to make something in the world and worry about the rest of it later and not get too caught up in rules." - bit.ly

Happy birthday, Winn Butler! He revealed how this album was influenced by a series of letters he exchanged as a youth: “In high school I had a letter-writing romance with a girl. I was trying to remember that time… waiting an entire summer, pretty much half a year, the anxiousness of waiting for letters to arrive. All day every day there’s almost this cloud of feeling hanging over everything. [Our family family would] be in Maine, I’d walk down to the post office and come back… the whole day was consumed by that feeling.” www.nme.com/news/music/arcade-fire-292-1296114

"Directed by 2013 Sundance Grand Jury Prize for Short Films winner Kahlil Joseph, The Reflektor Tapes is a fascinating insight into the making of Arcade Fire’s international #1 album Reflektor. The film recontextualizes the album experience, transporting the viewer into a kaleidoscopic sonic and visual landscape. It charts the band’s creative journey as they lay foundations for the album in Jamaica, record in Montreal and play an impromptu gig at a Haitian hotel on the first night of Carnival, before bringing their breath-taking live show to packed arenas in Los Angeles and London. The Reflektor Tapes blends never before seen personal interviews and moments captured by the band to dazzling effect, and features 15 minutes of exclusive unseen footage, filmed only for cinema audiences." thereflektortapes.com
