7:43 AMDear John, Here's a picture of my son, taken today at our beloved neighborhood school in Fairbanks, Alaska - Pearl Creek Elementary. He is the one at bottom right . . . you may take special note of his shirt. In this photo, he is working with his 3rd grade classmates to transplant seedlings they started last month as part of a science unit. His school is full of wonderful, hard-working educators and staff who give their all every single day for our kids. We love and appreciate them so very much. Two weeks ago, our local school board voted to close this wonderful neighborhood school. In the face of continued flat-funding for education in our state, school districts around Alaska are faced with devastating decisions, resulting in multiple school closures, staff lay-offs, and outsourcing of union jobs. It's absolutely terrifying and maddening to watch the grown-ups in charge of this state bleed our public schools dry year after year, actively harming our children's education. Despite overwhelming public support for sustainable, inflation-proof school funding, the majority of our leadership fails to act. My family, and many, many others, are devastated to lose our beloved neighborhood school. Our son has thrived in this environment and received a high-quality education despite the budgetary constraints our state and local government impose upon our educators. I'm hoping you can play a request this Friday morning, a song for . . . well, just that: HOPE. The Rainbow Connection. Because I hope that this will all turn around and someday, we'll find a way out of this current mess. You know, maybe the lovers, the dreamers, and WE. Because we are all in this together. WE are not alone! Thank you thank you thank you! Sincerely, Nikole, Justin, and Graham Fairbanks, Alaska KEXP Amplifiers/Gold Club -- Here's Kermit, playing his banjo and singing to the lovers and dreamers: www.youtube.com - Jan 20, 2025

9:32 AMGood morning! I’m an amplifier because The Morning Show is on the air and because John Richards created an awesome community of music people by reminding us that we are not alone and by playing great music that’s worth listening to and sharing. The Morning Show has been part of my life for at least 15 years, and has been a constant, no matter what else changed. I don’t want to imagine what life would be like without this show and this community. Please keep doing what you’re doing. I love the ability to stream from the app and go back to the online archive for shows I miss. The song that inspired me to donate the first time was Kermit the Frog, Rainbow Connection but no worries if there’s no time for that today. 18:58 PMThis special song goes to Rachel in Sammamish, who requests: Hey! Can y'all play the Kermit the frog 🌈song? Gave me a breath of hope and peace in the midst of what seemed like my father being slowly murdered by cancer, to this day a rainbow and Kermit will always remain a beacon of hope in dark times reminding me that hope and grief and peace can be simultaneously existing in the same place. - Jun 18, 2024

18:31 PMMusic has been a huge part of my life since I was a child and was always my answer to the question "what could you not live without?" A year ago I turned my entire life upside down to follow a passion to go back to grad school for applied cognition and neuroscience with an eventual goal of using music in my therapy practice to help others heal. But the journey has not been easy and the last few weeks have brought a level of depression, despair, panic, and, dread that I have never experienced before. I second guessed everything I thought I wanted to do. Younger me never expected that in my 50th year around the planet I would be getting divorced, starting completely over, and living across the country in a place so foreign to me that I can't even fathom how I got here. I have been grieving my life I built in Seattle for decades. I ended up missing the application deadline for school and began to feel like I couldn't survive this. Everything brought me to my knees. I couldn't get out of bed and felt utterly and completely lost. But today I vowed I would actually get up, shower, and try to do something productive. I pleaded with the universe to show me a sign that I actually WAS on the right path because I just wasn't sure anymore. A few minutes later I tuned into KEXP and "Don't Give Up" was playing. I immediately shared with my roommate that it felt like a pretty strong sign. A song, giving me a message I needed to hear. I didn't know at the time it was Music Heals - Mental Health day. But as soon as I heard the first air break and you saying what day it was, I completely broke down in tears. I guess the universe just gave me a huge flashing billboard for a sign. So, thank you. Would you kindly play The Rainbow Connection, by Kermit? It always brings a smile to my face. Thank you for being there. I feel seen. Krista in North Texas - Jan 19, 2024

14:42 PMThis one goes out to Blake. "The Rainbow Connection" made its first appearance in "The Muppet Movie." Written by songwriters Paul Williams and Kenny Ascher, it was later nominated in the Best Song category at the 52nd Academy Awards in 1980. Says Williams: "The best part of being a songwriter - beyond being able to make a living at it - is what I call the 'heart payment' of a song. That's when somebody comes up after a concert and says, "[that song]got me through some hard times.' That's heart payment for a songwriter." -- Watch Kermie sing "The Rainbow Connection" here: www.youtube.com - May 13, 2022
