This song was originally conceived as "I'm So Bored With You" but Joe misheard the words.

Originally the song was called "I'm So Bored With You", written by Mick Jones before he joined The Clash. In his first meeting with Joe Strummer, Jones played several of his songs, and when he played "I'm So Bored With You," Strummer apparently misheard the lyrics as "I'm So Bored with the USA." Thinking that this would form a great song about the social ills of America, Strummer started coming up with new lyrics before Jones could explain that actually it was about his then-current on-off relationship.

Originally this track was going to be called "I'm So Bored With You", but due to some misheard lyrics, it was changed up to touch on several aspects of American society: drug problems in the US Army, American government support of dictatorships in the Third World, and (oddly) Starsky and Hutch and Kojak. It also criticizes Richard Nixon, mentioning the Watergate scandal's tapes.
