‘Temptation’ wouldn’t have existed without two important influences: Martin Hannett and New York club culture. Hannett had shown New Order how to use studio technology, allowing them to craft their increasingly synth-dominated songs without the need for a producer. This new knowledge coincided with a trip to America in 1981, during which the band were introduced to the synthetic beats of Italian disco pioneers like Giorgio Moroder. faroutmagazine.co.uk

On this day in 1976 The Sex Pistols appeared at The Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester, England. The now legendary night is regarded as a catalyst to the punk rock movement. The Clash and The Damned made their live debuts opening for the band on their shows today and on June 6th. In an audience of fewer than 42 people, several key members of Manchester's future music scene were present including Peter Hook and Bernard Sumner of New Order and Joy Division.

On May 10th, 1982, New Order released the single "Temptation." -- This was the first song the group produced themselves, splitting with Martin Hannett, who the band credit for teaching them the mechanics of recording. "Producing ourselves we get more satisfaction," frontman Bernard Sumner told The Face in 1983. "We know what we want and we can do it. With Martin the songs often turned out different, sometimes better, sometimes not." - (This one turned out pretty well, don't you think?)

I’ve been listening for years, becoming a daily listener in 2013 as I was coming to terms with addiction, the imminent death of my dad, and (more happily) the birth of my daughter. Things started getting better, not every day, but gradually things got so much better. I’ve come to terms, with the advice of a couple of therapists, that fall is something for me to be aware of as I let grief and worry creep in and overtake my day-to-day. This year, I was talking with my newest therapist when I realized that I had not commemorated or wallowed in the anniversary of my dad's passing, nor did I get totally bummed out when the M’s flamed out in the stretch. This is new. I feel like the community I know and don’t know that supports me with kind words, music and love has really made the difference and KEXP has been a cornerstone for me. Thank you for everything you do. The day you turned a page for me with my addiction, you played Temptation and Up Against the Wall back to back. I was on a bicycle riding to work and it was like the sun came out on a gray Chicago morning. Thanks for that ray of light. Andy in Portland

On this day in 1982, New Order released their standalone single "Temptation" and it's 8:45 minutes of beauty. Founding bandmember Bernard Sumner told Mojo in a 2015 interview that this is probably his favorite New Order song. He said: "It's got a spirituality to it. It's really uplifting without actually getting a specific message across. It was interesting to see that you could do that while, at the time, being fairly abstract. I struggled with the literalness of my lyrics in the early days. I didn't want to expose my inner feelings to the general public ." See the official music video for "Temptation": www.youtube.com

Peter Hook revealed that the little “whoop” that singer Bernard Sumner throws in came about due to a prank Hook played with help from manager Rob Gretton. “Rob and me, spotting that it was snowing outside the studio, snowballed Barney while he was doing the main vocal, which produced the ‘whoop’,” the bassist wrote. “The song itself was a complete one-off. Fast, dance-y, simple.”

The 7" version features synthpop vibes -- while the 12" emphasizes the rhythms over melody, and includes an audible scream from Bernard Sumner when bandmates surprised him with a snowball down his shirt. -- tinyurl.com Neither single includes the name of the band or the song -- the sleeve was simply stamped "FAC 63"

Hi John! It’s my friend Tony’s birthday - and If you have time, perhaps you could play something that’s absolutely no fun like “Temptation” by New Order, or any number of what I consider “happy” music from the Cure to make sure he has a semi-okay day?...He loves KEXP and makes sure everyone knows it. And, he is the reason I am an amplifier. Thanks for making the days go a little easier and reminding us that we aren’t alone. Time to dance! With love, Kayla in Chicago -- New Order and Pet Shop Boys are playing Climate Pledge Arena here in Seattle tonight, Friday, October 14th. -- The band would sometimes end their shows with this song, at times without being onstage. During the last few minutes of the song, an unmanned sequencer and drum machine could play out the song while the band departed, leaving the crowd staring at the instruments. Eschewing an encore, the band would disappear, leaving the audience to wonder what happened.
