10:06 AMGood morning - you've got it tuned into The Midday Show with Cheryl Waters. We're so glad that you're here with us. -- "The people will survive." Guitarist D. Boon wrote "Corona" following a trip to Mexico on Independence Day in 1982 with his fellow Minutemen bandmates. The band fell asleep on the beach and when they awoke, they saw a local woman collecting their empty beer bottles, which she could then return to the distributor for a very small cash reward. Moved by what he saw, Boon wrote this song for the Mexican people living in poverty. - Sep 30, 2024

11:10 AM“Corona is very heartfelt,” says former Minutemen bassist Mike Watt. “[Guitarist] D. Boon wrote that one on a trip to Mexico. After all the drinking and the partying, the morning after, there’s a lady picking up bottles, to turn them in to get monies for her babies. It really touched him.” Read the story of this song and its unfortunate association with the TV show "Jackass": www.loudersound.com - Feb 22, 2019
17:58 PM"Corona" is a song by American punk rock band Minutemen from the album Double Nickels on the Dime, which was composed by the band's lead singer and guitarist D. Boon. The song was inspired by a day trip the band members (Boon, bassist Mike Watt, and drummer George Hurley) had taken to Mexico on the Fourth of July, 1982. (The same trip also inspired the Mike Watt composition "I Felt Like A Gringo" on Buzz or Howl Under the Influence of Heat.) Moved by some of the more downtrodden elements of the area that he had seen, Boon set about writing a song in sympathy with the people of Mexico. In contrast to the more frantic hardcore punk tempos of the day, "Corona" uses an almost polka-like country swing rhythm for the song. bit.ly - Aug 14, 2017
