From Madonna's debut self-titled album, released in 1984. "Burning Up" was written by Madonna and produced by Reggie Lucas - recording took place at New York's Sigma Sound Studios. The song moved Madonna towards a pop-oriented path. Madonna herself described it as her "foray into electric guitars, Rock and roll and hair music".

"Burning Up" was released as a single from Madonna's debut self-titled album. The song was presented as an early recorded demo by Madonna to Sire Records who green-lighted the recording of the single after the first single "Everybody" became a dance hit.
