7:05 AM" ‘Transmission’ would be the band’s very first single but the cut we are all familiar with isn’t the original and, in actual fact, the track was first recorded in 1978 for the band’s aborted self-titled album. It was later re-recorded the following year at a faster tempo and released by record label Factory as the band’s debut single, one that helped Joy Division become the voice of angsty teens across Britain.": faroutmagazine.co.uk - May 22, 2023

11:04 AM#128 - Joy Division "Transmission" (1979) Greil Marcus has a chapter on this song in his book "The History of Rock 'n' Roll in Ten Songs." According to Marcus, "'Transmission' is not an argument. It's a dramatization of the realization that the act of listening to the radio is a suicidal gesture. It will kill your mind. It will rob your soul." Marcus also quotes the band's bassist Peter Hook about the importance of this song: "We were doing a soundcheck at the Mayflower, in May, and we played 'Transmission': people had been moving around, and they all stopped to listen. I realized that was our first great song." bit.ly - Dec 19, 2021

6:27 AMWarsaw (as the band was originally known), played their first gig on May 29, 1977 supporting the Buzzcocks at the Electric Circus. The name Warsaw, in reference to Bowie's song "Warszawa" was soon replaced to avoid confusion with another band called Warsaw Pakt. In keeping with the allusion to WWII, the band took the name Joy Division from a prostitution wing of a Nazi concentration camp as mentioned in the 1955 novel by holocaust survivor Ka-tzetnik 135633, "The House of Dolls." The newly named Joy Division performed their first gig January 25, 1978 at Pip's Disco in Manchester. - Jan 18, 2019
7:29 AMSpeaking of Joy Division, this song is "an Orwellian nightmare: [Ian Curtis'] voice ringing out as if at a dystopian rally, trying to wake a population of people who’ve become mindless, all-obeying automatons. “Listen to the silence, let it ring on / Eyes, dark grey lenses frightened of the sun,” he howls. “And we would go on as though nothing was wrong / And hide from these days as we remained all alone.” :www.theguardian.com - Dec 18, 2018
