On this day in 1969, Joe Cocker released his debut album With a Little Help from My Friends. "With a Little Help From My Friends is the major triumph of rock interpretation thus far. Cocker's material leans to the conventional ... but his conception and performance, as well as Denny Cordell's production, are always audacious. His transformation of "Bye Bye Blackbird" and "A Little Help From My Friends" from light-hearted ditties into wails of human need succeeds perfectly..." writes Robert Christgau, The New York Times.

Stephanie, from Vancouver, Washington: I've appreciated the music today and your recognition of mental health. But did you know that today, February 29, is also Rare Disease Day? Rare Disease Day is focused on raising awareness and generating change for the 300 million people worldwide living with a rare disease, their families and carers. I work for a clinical research company and last year one of my co-workers asked people to suggest songs for a rare disease playlist, full of songs that we thought exemplified this remarkable, resilient patient community. There are so many songs on the list, spanning genres and decades! So I did a quick scan of the list, trying to find a song to request that would be suitable for both mental health and the rare community. So how about, "A little help from my friends" by Joe Cocker. -- Originally written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, and sung by Ringo Starr. This version was recorded in 3/4 time - a waltz. The Beatles original version was in traditional 4/4 time. Jimmy Page played guitar and BJ Wilson from Procol Harum played drums on the track. The soul singers Madeline Bell Reeves, Rosetta Hightower, Patrice Holloway, and Sunny Wheetman provided backing vocals. -- Here's a wonderful live version from 2013: www.youtube.com

Stephanie: "Hi Evie and crew, thanks so much for putting your love and energy into this day. I love catching your sets, but today’s is extra special. Thank you for putting such a gorgeous offering out into the universe for us to share. I lost my dad, Regi, to cancer in Nov 2012. He was my shining example of what a kind, generous human looks like. I was truly blessed to have been loved like that and he is deeply missed. If you can, Joe Cocker’s "With a Little Help From My Friends" always reminds me of my dad. He was a little tone deaf and he always used to sing this song whenever it came on. I can still hear him singing along to it, just a little off key. Love and light to you always. So thankful for you and KEXP ♥️"

Sesame Street did a parody of this called "With A Little Yelp From My Friends." It was performed by "Moe Cocker," a Cocker Spaniel. This version of the song is about a dog who yelps for help when he can't find his bone or scratch a flea. Sometimes you just need a scratch. www.youtube.com
