Detroit, 1969, one Robert Jay (Robert Brown Jr.) woke up with the devil on his shoulder and a song in his head. Luckily for us the song won out in the end.
Originally released in 1969 on Jo Ann Records as Bro Robert, the first version – “Alcohol Pt. 1” is a full on funky jangle that is very cool in its own right. -- The 1973 version of “Alcohol” is a heavy funk masterpiece with an absolutely killer chunky riff, a wicked bass line and the coolest cry baby wah scratch rhythm.

Geraldo Pino was a singer and guitarist from Sierra Leone (born in 1934 in Enugu, Nigeria / died of illness in 2008) who was one of the first artists to become successful while incorporating American funk into the growing West African Afrobeat scene of the mid to late '60s.
To the sounds of the likes of James Brown, the Sierra Leonean Nigerian musician infused strong African percussive elements and the revolutionary stance that permeated throughout Africa at the time. Also characteristic of Geraldo Pino's music were the distinctively funky sounds of the Hammond B-3 organ.
As Pino was selling out shows in Nigeria he made a huge impression on Fela Kuti. Kuti then followed suit and incorporated similar funky elements into his live shows and recordings. It is said that Kuti then moved to America in order to promote his music because he didn't believe he could compete with Pino's popularity in West Africa. The move proved beneficial for Kuti who immediately caught the ears of Western producers and audiences. Meanwhile, Pino and his influence on the development of Afrobeat remained relatively unknown outside Africa until recently.

"Boodi Shakes Money", is equally impressive with the bass making its presence felt along with some infectious vocals. But don't fret; the fuzz guitar and cowbell haven't gone anywhere.

The song was written and recorded by producer James Hartnett – having studied music theory and composition back in high school and recognized back then for producing a charted northern soul spin in the UK titled “Hipit” back in 1976 with his studio band “Hosanna”, it’s in 1978 that Hartnett produced and self released the scarcer and more compelling “Just One Dance Before You Go” which he refers to as his masterpiece.
With a fairly stripped back line up for a disco tune including a rhythm section, Hammond organ, horns and vocals, Hartnett manages to do so much through seemingly simple but clever arrangements and thumping, contagious energy. Hartnett had also invited friend and singer Leroy Shahid Wheeler to perform lead vocals, who’s signature high pitched falsetto lifts the whole operation above ground – a true feel good party anthem!

"Disco Illusion" has a remarkable story behind it. The single was recorded in 1979 in Trinidad & Tobago by a group of local musicians, and released on the obscure Kalinda label. It was a rare blend of R&B vocals and weighty West Indian bass backed with a cosmic instrumental vamp that lifts the track into the stratosphere midway through. There was only one problem: the record failed to get distribution so no one ever heard it. Until last year, that is, when someone found a box full of copies in a Trinidadian warehouse. The folks at Invisible City Editions then reissued the record and here we are today.
Disco Illusion was the only record Stephen Encinas ever made.

Gladys McFadden and the Loving Sisters were an African-American gospel group based in Little Rock (Pulaski County). At its artistic peak in the 1970s, the group’s adventurous, contemporary style put its sound outside the realm of traditional gospel music. The group—which included McFadden as well as Jo Dumas, Ann James, and Lorraine Leeks—was inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame in 2003.

Breaks With Tradition: “Midnight Theme”
Sometimes the most fascinating breaks come from songs we probably wouldn’t even know about at all unless someone sampled them.
Manzel’s “Midnight Theme” — is a perfect example of that phenomenon. The second of two singles the Cincinnati-area band put out when the trio (keyboardist Manzel Bush, drummer Steve Garner, and guitarist John Van Dyke) were already dissolved, this 1979 7″ just so happened to open with four bars of unaccompanied Garner drumming that made it perfect bait for hip-hop producers starting in the mid-’80s dawn of the sample era.

In 1976, French band Édition Spéciale released their debut album, "Allee Des Tilleuls". While much of the album saw them explore progressive rock and jazz-rock territory, it did contain one suitably groovy and life-affirming trip into jazz-funk territory, surprise LP standout "Mr Business". Here that cut gets a single release for the very first time courtesy of the dusty-fingered diggers at Pepite.

During his prolific period with the short-lived independent label Double Shot Records, Brenton would cut eleven 45s and release the studio albums Oogum Boogum and Baby You Got It, creating a unique blend of contemporary pop soul and throwback doo-wop ballads that resonate to this day.
