The song "Black Gold Disco Moving Machine" by Joe & Lee was the theme song for the regional dance show called Black Gold (in Jackson, Mississippi, on Saturdays). The show was back in the late 70's and ran through the early 90's. Hosted by Lee King and backed by his Mean Machine Dancers. Back then, this was the Mid-South's equivalent to "Soul Train" or "Solid Gold". Many tuned in every weekend to catch up on the latest moves and grooves. Dancing you wouldn't dare catch on Soul Train.

The Choice Four were a nice harmonizing soul group from Washington, D.C., whose records deserved a better fate. They recorded for RCA in the mid-'70s, but were never able to score a breakout hit, despite making some very moving, nicely sung ballads. Prior to the group’s formation, several of the members had previously sung in other music groups such as The Stridels and The Love Tones. www.allmusic.com rareandobscuremusic.wordpress.com

"Direct Connec Shun" was a Houston, Texas based band started by bassist Bernard “Kinny” Mercier and keyboardist Marsha McDonald around 1978. They were the house band at the Flag Ship Hotel in Galveston, Texas. They did a lot of opening concerts for the famous soul / funk acts of the era including The Bar Kays, SOS Band, Chaka Khan or Con Funk Shun. The band recorded the vocal & instrumental versions in an 8 hours session over a two day period. According to Bernard Mercier, only 500 copies were pressed and most of the stock got destroyed in a flood – which made this record really rare and hard to find to this day.

As a young man, Larry H. Jordan wasn't a fan of church or gospel music. The former professional R&B singer says that he found the shouting and hollering of traditional black gospel music too shrill and too loud. But after finding the Lord and becoming an ordained bishop, Jordan and his brother-in-law Frank Tinsley, founded Washington DC soul/gospel outfit Enlightment in the mid 80s. One of the first groups to fuse modern R&B production with gospel themes, Enlightment's 1984 debut album Faith Is the Key used funk and soul in an attempt to reach a larger audience. Despite unimaginable obstacles, the Bar-Kays have endured as one of the longest-running funk and soul groups ever, while their talents as a backing band can be heard on some of the most popular albums of the ’60s and ’70s. In their earliest incarnation—more than 55 years ago—the band proved the power of determination, working tirelessly to earn their place at Stax and perform alongside one of the label’s biggest stars. But when tragedy struck, the remaining members of the group were forced to channel that passion to reimagine what—and who—the Bar-Kays could be.
