The Freedom of Choice tour was an ambitious one with dates in Japan, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands and Canada. Their stage set was relatively minimalist but also illuminated by industrial walls and towers with flashing lights. They also rocked the infamous red energy dome hats and Tyvek costumes, consisting of grey shirts and pants with long red strips of tape attached to them.

The lyrics "Keep on pushing straight ahead..." towards the end of the song are most likely a reference to the Curtis Mayfield song "Keep On Pushing" from the album of the same name. Mayfield was a major influence on Hendrix.

It was written in early 1964 and was influenced by the symbolist poetry of Arthur Rimbaud. The song depicts the feelings and thoughts of the singer and his companion as they wait out a lightning storm under a doorway.

Join KEXP in remembering Swift’s profound legacy by revisiting some of his astounding work, both as a songwriter and producer, below. www.kexp.org
Swift’s loss is a blow to the indie music community, both in his role as a performer and behind the boards. Throughout his career, he’s served as a member of The Shins, The Arcs, and Starflyer 59 and performed as a touring member for acts such as Wilco, The Black Keys, and Cold War Kids. Swift also had an extensive solo career, releasing seven albums, numerous EPs and singles. His most recent release was a collaborative cover album with Damien Jurado appropriately titled Other People’s Songs Volume One. Swift was maybe his most prolific as a producer, recording albums for Kevin Morby, Sharon Van Etten, Tennis, Guster, Damien Jurado, David Bazan, Pure Bathing Culture, and many more.
