On "52 Girls," Kate and Cindy simply list off names of girls (including their own), and only note that you can "see them on the beach / Or in New York City". Although they say that these are the "principle girls" in the U.S.A., their only other challenge is to see if you, the listener, can name them today. That's it. These are not the topics that great insight can be culled from, but when married with Wilson's multi-tiered melodies and Keith Strickland's well-placed tom hits, there is a thunderous energy that's generated with Kate and Cindy shout out "Name them all today!": www.popmatters.com

I have been to the movies, I've seen how it ends... And the joke's on them..." Carlile explained to NPR that "there are so many people feeling misrepresented. So many people feeling unloved. The song is just for people that feel under-represented, unloved or illegal."

"Cuyahoga" is the name of the river in Northern Ohio that the city of Cleveland was built around. There were many tribes of Indians which used to live in the region ("This is where they walked, swam, hunted, danced and sang"), and they simply called the river the Crooked River due to its zig-zag nature and many U-shaped turns. "Cuyahoga" is an Indian word meaning "crooked." R.E.M. lead singer Michael Stipe explained in the November 12, 2009 issue of Rolling Stone: "It's an Indian word I mispronounce in the song. The Cuyahoga River in Ohio caught fire in 1969 because of pollution dumped into it. The song addresses environmental devastation and our history with Native Americans, which isn't pleasant."

This was the first time Paul McCartney wrote the words to a song before the music. The song began as a poem he conceived while he was shaving one morning thinking about his girlfriend Jane Asher, whom he met when she interviewed him for the magazine Radio Times. Adia Victoria says of this song, “I wrote it about when I was down in Atlanta, when I lived there in my early 20s. It was a hazy, wild, debaucherous time.
