Nicola Cruz's music is said to invoke the landscapes and rituals of his homeland, Ecuador, a country that is home both to the Andes mountains and the Amazon jungle.
This song was written in 1984 by Compay Segundo, who first dreamed the opening melody in his sleep and later wrote the lyrics. On the composition of the song, Compay Segundo said:
"I didn't compose Chan Chan, I dreamt it. I dream of music. I sometimes wake up with a melody in my head, I hear the instruments, all very clear. I look over the balcony and I see nobody, but I hear it as if it was played on the street. I don't know what it can be. One day I woke up hearing those four sensitive notes, I gave them a lyric inspired by a children's tale from my childhood, Juanica y Chan Chan, and you see, now it's sung everywhere."

RIP James Mendenhall who passed away NYE. The Prom was formed in Seattle, Washington in 1999 by James Mendenhall and David Broecker, who had previously played together in their home town of Omaha, Nebraska.
The Prom's low-fi debut, in this way they found me, was released on Portland, Oregon's Panther Fact Records in 2000. Afterwards, the band began playing regional shows and found a fan in Death Cab For Cutie's Chris Walla, who produced the Prom's first Barsuk release, the 3-song EP Saloon Song +2. The trio's sophomore record, Under the Same Stars, followed in 2002 on Barsuk Records, with a polished, fully-realized sound and a set of sparkling songs perfect for gazing skyward." www.barsuk.com
The flavor of this song was heavily influenced by Lennon's and the Beatles' interest in Transcendental Meditation in late 1967 – early 1968, when the song was composed. Based on this, he added the mantra "Jai guru deva om" (Sanskrit: जय गुरुदेव ॐ) to the piece, which became the link to the chorus. Sankrit is a complex language and can often be interpreted in many different ways, for Sanskrit assigns more emphasis to the action taking place and less to the object. Mantra translations include: "glory to the shining remover of darkness", "Victory to God divine", "Hail to the divine guru", or the phrase commonly invoked by the late Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in referring to his spiritual teacher, "All glory to Guru Dev"
The band's eighth album also marked their first time working with an outside producer in the shape of Dave Fridmann.

Polvo is an accomplished band in the genre of math rock, touching on many of the genre's hallmarks: dissonant, intricately layered guitars that often employed alternate tunings; odd, off-kilter rhythms; an emphasis on dense sonic texture; and unorthodox song structures that, nonetheless, were often unconventionally melodic. Additionally, their music had a pronounced Eastern feel that came not only from the Indian and Middle Eastern-style drones in their compositions, but actual Asian instruments as well.
