T-Bone Burnett is well-known and widely respected as a producer, but before he embarked on that career he was a guitarist – he played in Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue in the ’70s – and started a solo career that saw him release albums in musical styles ranging from New Wave to country. This song appeared on his 1992 LP “The Criminal Under My Own Hat,” which won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk album, but it was first released the year before on the soundtrack to Wim Wenders’ film “Until the End of the World,” which Burnett also produced.

Cheryl selected this tune as a KEXP Song of the Day last August. www.kexp.org After a 34-year wait, original shoegaze outfit The Veldt have finally released their 'Illuminated 1989' album via Portland-based Little Cloud Records and North Carolina’s 5BC Records. This is the original 1989 full-length record produced by Cocteau Twins' Robin Guthrie. While originally intended to be the band's first album, their label Capitol Records shelved the recording and sent them back into the studio resulting in their first album being released with the title 'Marigolds

From the British band's third studio album, released in 2005. In 2018, Pitchfork ranked Tender Buttons at number seven on its list of the 30 best dream pop albums. The flavors of yé-yé sung in Keenan’s spectral voice sound even more intimate over a drum machine, as evidenced by the sticky “Black Cat”.... Tender Buttons may not be as delicate as other classics of dream-pop, but its noisy, sanguine sound and the group's maverick spirit make it essential. bit.ly "Certain sounds evoke a place and time, a person, so suddenly that hearing them can feel like pointed attacks. They transport us, whether we ask for it or not, into an earlier iteration of ourselves, returning the past to present, collapsing our sense of linear time. The phantasmagoric pop of Broadcast’s Tender Buttons references this rift in subtle layers." bit.ly broadcast.bandcamp.com

"Sam Hopkins was a Texas country bluesman of the highest caliber whose career began in the 1920s and stretched all the way into the 1980s. Along the way, Hopkins watched the genre change remarkably, but he never appreciably altered his mournful Lone Star sound, which translated onto both acoustic and electric guitar. Hopkins' nimble dexterity made intricate boogie riffs seem easy, and his fascinating penchant for improvising lyrics to fit whatever situation might arise made him a beloved blues troubadour." www.allmusic.com

T. Rex were an English rock band, formed in 1967 by singer-songwriter and guitarist Marc Bolan. In 1969, Bolan began to change the band's style towards electric rock, and shortened their name to T. Rex the following year. This development culminated in 1970 with the song "Ride a White Swan", and the group soon became pioneers of the glam rock movement. In 1977, founder, songwriter and sole constant member Bolan died in a car crash several months after the release of the group's final studio album Dandy in the Underworld, and the group disbanded. T. Rex have continued to influence a variety of subsequent artists. The band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020.

Sly & the Family Stone included "Everyday People" in their set at Woodstock, which, according to Carlos Santana, was the standout performance at the festival. Sly & the Family Stone were some of the artists at the Harlem Music Festival in 1969, a largely forgotten cultural experience until Questlove documented it in the great "Summer of Soul." "The video shows the band playing in an audition in a high school gymnasium, with different light filters changing the color of the room. Karen O's crying in the video was not staged. She explains: "They were real tears. My boyfriend at the time (Angus Andrew [of the band Liars]) was supposed to come to the shoot – he was three hours late and I was just about to leave for tour. I didn't think he was even going to come and this was the song that was written for him. He eventually showed up and I got myself in a real emotional state." Some have suggested the song title stands for “My Angus Please Stay,” though this was never confirmed by the band." www.youtube.com

The Stones recorded this during a three-day session at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios in Alabama from December 2-4, 1969. It was the last of three songs done at these sessions, after "Brown Sugar" and "You Gotta Move." Muscle Shoals Sound Studios (actually located in Sheffield, Alabama) opened in May 1969 when Jerry Wexler at Atlantic Records (The Stones' label) loaned money to four of the musicians at nearby FAME studios so they could start their own company and install 8-track recording equipment (FAME was on 4-track). Wexler sent many of Atlantic's acts to Muscle Shoals, since the musicians were fantastic and it was a dry county with nothing to do, which meant the artists were more likely to stay focused. The studio also had a distinctive sound that can be heard on this track, especially on Jagger's vocals - you can hear a slight distortion that was caused by the console. www.songfacts.com

In 1967, Jamaican reggae singer Dawn Penn recorded a version of Willie Cobbs' 1960 song "You Don't Love Me" , incorporating elements of its music and lyrics. Cobbs' song was based on Bo Diddley's 1955 song "She's Fine, She's Mine". Both are credited as songwriters on Penn's recording. In 1994, after a 17-year break from the music industry, she re-recorded this dancehall version of the song and retitled it "You Don't Love Me (No, No, No)" - it appeared on the Jamaican artist's first studio album, 'No, No, No'.
