Welcome to the Midday Show! We're happy to have you here with us :) -- "Toulouse Street was the album by which most of their fans began discovering the Doobie Brothers, and it has retained a lot of its freshness over the decades. Producer Ted Templeman was attuned to the slightly heavier and more Southern style the band wanted to work toward on this, their second album, and the results were not only profitable -- including a platinum record award -- but artistically impeccable." bit.ly

"A hard-to-classify rock band with none of the fashionable influences of the early '90s -- although their Krautrock fixation would go on to become a badge of hipness in the latter half of the decade -- Th' Faith Healers didn't fit in the U.K. indie scene of their time, but their records hold up much better than those of many of their contemporaries." bit.ly

For the bass line of the song, the Dust Brothers sampled "A Part of Me" by the band Country Funk. The whistling in the introduction comes from "The Moog and Me" by Dick Hyman. The organ line is from "Life" by Sly & the Family Stone. bit.ly Another sample Beck did initially use was from a Barbie cell phone, which was originally at the end of this song. However it had to be deleted from the final version after Mattel denied permission for its use. Beck told Pulse!: "We tried to kidnap Barbie, but Mattel has some pretty intense muscle that I wouldn't want to be locked up into. Barbie's got a mean uncle." bit.ly

"Hidden Place" is off of Icelandic icon Björk's fourth studio album, 'Vespertine.' "'Hidden Place' is sort of about how two people can create a paradise just by uniting. You've got an emotional location that's mutual. And it's unbreakable. And obviously it's make-believe. So, you could argue that it doesn't exist because it's invisible, but of course it does," Björk said of the song. web.archive.org

Happy Birthday to Nina Simone! -- In the early days of performing in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Nina Simone often closed out her performances with “Sinnerman.” The placement of the song in her setlist was intentional. In a documentary, she put it plainly: “I want to shake people up so bad that when they leave a nightclub where I’ve performed, I want them to be in pieces.” -- During “Sinnerman,” Simone (who likely learned the song from her minister mother’s “deep religiosity” while growing up) takes the blues and jazz – both of which were derived in her home region of the South – and flips the original folk-leaning song on its head. She cries out to God to forgive her transgressions, implementing scatting and improvisation techniques with the audience, reminiscent of field hollers utilized by slaves who worked on plantations.: bit.ly -- See a clip of Nina Simone performing "Sinnerman": youtu.be

Hello, happy Wednesday, and welcome to The Afternoon Show with the indefatigable Troy Nelson. We're so happy that you're listening! -- That's Anthony Gonzalez on lead vocals on this song. He also sings background vocals with L.A. musician Kaela Sinclair. -- "'Earth to Sea,' the next song, is pretty standard M83 to start out. A punchy synth bass and some sweeping pads. The final minute of this track, however, is where it really shines. Everything just explodes into this beyond massive array of synths, guitar, and vocals, creating what, in my humble opinion, might be one of the most euphoric and emotional segments of music I have ever listened to. Even though the lead-up is pretty long, the payoff at the end of this track is absolutely worth the wait...." Enjoy this review of "Fantasy": kjhk.org
