This is a disco cover of the original 1963 song written by Bobby Hebb. Hebb's timeless classic was inspired by two tragic events: the fatal stabbing of his older brother Harold outside a club in Nashville on November 23rd, 1963, and the assassination of John F. Kennedy in Dallas the previous day. "All my intentions were just to think of happier times – basically looking for a brighter day – because times were at a low tide," said Hebb. "I needed to pick myself up, and 'Sunny' became that pick-me-up. It was, and is, an ode to a sunny disposition and a melodic plea for peace."

On "Beautiful People", Ware ups the ante and brings it back to the dance floor: “It’s got this kind of impatient energy. And it’s very much about that experience of being able to open those doors to a club, and the beautiful people are everywhere. That moment of feeling like you’re so part of a community, and that escapism. It’s about taking your life, putting it on hold for a moment, and just fuc*ing dancing and enjoying yourself.” www.rollingstone.co.uk

The whistling at the end of the song was the spontaneous result of Redding having a bit of a brain fart. Okay, so maybe that’s the most diplomatic way to put it, but the fact of the matter is that Redding – per guitarist Steve Cropper – had worked up “this little fadeout rap he was gonna do, an adlib,” and when the time came for him to work his verbal magic, he blanked. “So he started whistling,” said Cropper, and the end result was one of the many instantly-memorable moments that stand out in the track. shorturl.at

"Wildflowers" was enormously successful, selling 3 million copies in the U.S. and peaking at Number Eight on the Top 200. To producer Rick Rubin, the album’s sturdiness was a shock. “I think the reason I was surprised has to do with the idea of a grown-up making a good record,” he told Petty biographer Warren Zanes. “When you think of the great songwriters, they weren’t making great albums at that point. I can’t remember what Paul Simon record or what Paul McCartney record came out around that time. But I’m guessing they just weren’t as good.” Here are 10 more interesting facts about this album that you might not know: www.rollingstone.com

In January 2023, 'The Magic Number' was officially released onto streaming services along with the announcement that De La Soul's first six albums would also be added on March 3. De La's back catalogue had been absent from streaming services for many years since many of the samples in their music had only been cleared for use on physical copies of their records. Warner, who had owned the rights to De La's music until 2017, had been reluctant to try to clear these samples and renegotiate contracts. After several disputes and the rights trading hands a number of times, it was only until June 2021 when Reservoir Media bought Tommy Boy Records (who owned the catalog at the time) that the clearance process could begin. Though many samples were replayed in cases where the master couldn't be cleared, some vanished altogether – on the 2023 version of 'The Magic Number,' the sample of Eddie Murphy saying "Anybody in the audience ever get hit by a car?" was notably missing. www.whosampled.com

Old & In the Way was a bluegrass supergroup formed in 1973. It was composed of Peter Rowan (guitar, vocals), Vassar Clements (fiddle), Jerry Garcia (banjo, vocals), David Grisman (mandolin, vocals), and John Kahn (string bass). Garcia formed the band as a vehicle to play bluegrass banjo. The group grew out of living room jams between Garcia, Grisman and Rowan who all lived near each other in Marin County, California. They were together for a total of nine months, and the Old & In The Way album was recorded in October of 1973 in front of an audience at The Boarding House in San Francisco, where most of the group’s discography was recorded. internetfm.com

"I wrote this for a friend of mine who died in a fire," Browne said of the poignant song in 2016. "He was in the sauna in a house that burned down, so he had no idea anything was going on. It was very sad. He was a really interesting guy. Besides being a great dancer, he was an ice skater - he had a job in the Ice Follies. And he was a great tailor - he would make his friends clothes. He was a Renaissance man. When I wrote him the song - it's a song I've sung many times, other times when people have died - but I was making a metaphor out of the dance. Just the idea that your life is a dance. And there's a line in it, 'In the end, there is one dance you do alone.' That's one of the songs I've sung all through the years, and for me, it's like going to that place, and dealing with the fact that life will end. It's a sad song, but at the same time, it feels good to sort through that reality and touch base with it, and then go on." Browne sang this at Phil Hartman's memorial service in 1998. It was also played at John Belushi's service in 1982. www.songfacts.com

Before he left The Hollies in 1968, Graham Nash offered this song to the band, but his bandmates rejected it as being not commercial enough. Their refusal to record this and other tunes he wrote was one of the main reasons Nash left the band and moved to Los Angeles to join up with Crosby and Stills. "After a couple months of that, a man is liable to go insane," Nash said of having his songs rejected, adding, "especially being the only one who was smoking grass at the time." Fortunately, his new bandmates liked the tune and it ended up on their debut album. -- "Marrakesh Express" was Crosby, Stills & Nash's first single. Their first album sold 4 million copies and made them a major touring attraction. For their next album (Déjà Vu in 1970), they added Neil Young and got even bigger.
