Good morning, happy Fat Tuesday, and welcome to The Midday Show with the fabulous Cheryl Waters! March is Women's History Month and, today, we're observing International Women's Day all day. -- "Throughout the month of March join KEXP for International Women's Month, celebrating amazing women making music—through the course of music history and today. All month you'll hear featured voices, mixes, live sessions, historical highlights, and of course, a little more of the music you hear all year long on KEXP." : www.kexp.org -- Sister Sledge is four sisters whose last names really are Sledge. They were a backup band for various artists before releasing this album, which was their first. This was their biggest hit. It was written and produced by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers; their band Chic had a hit at the time with "Le Freak." Rodgers and Edwards got the idea for the song's title when they first met the sisters.: bit.ly

Arlo grew up in South West London but is half Nigerian, a quarter Chadian and a quarter French. As a sensitive and shy teen, she wrote short stories to create her own fantasy worlds as she struggled with her identity in the real one: "I'm a black kid who can't dance for shit, listens to emo music and currently has a crush on some girl in my Spanish class," she says of her upbringing. Here's the official video for an early song, "Cola": www.youtube.com -- Arlo Parks shared a live performance recorded exclusively for KEXP and spoke with Gabriel Teodros. I was feeling guilty and ungrateful for not being happy about a few different things in my life that were technically going well. I had to work through some tough learned thought processes and emotions that had been working away for years to try to understand how to be happy with my present, and stop fixating on my past and future.' : www.youtube.com

In a breakdown of this track, Solange told Song Exploder: “I’ve had an extremely difficult relationship with meditating and trying to silence my brain, which is what so much of this song is about.” : songexploder.net -- In the song’s video, we see Solange alone and with fellow black women in grand, gorgeous spaces; the background’s scenic beauty is a vital component of the song’s persistent message. Jessica Dobson notes that "Lights Out" was “born out of a season where it felt like I couldn’t see farther than a foot in front of me for quite some time.” She continues, “There was a pestilent cloud of darkness around me, but I was fighting to keep my spirit intact and not fall into a deeper depression. Ultimately, it’s a song about the desire of wanting to be in a more life-giving place but knowing that you might need to be carried by the ones you love to get there. Vulnerability is always more powerful than trying to keep it together on your own.” -- Check out KEXP's presentation of "Lights Out," including the animated video created by frontwoman Jessica Dobson and her husband/drummer Peter Mansen: bit.ly
