"Supernova" is from the second album 'Whip-Smart' released in 1994. Phair described 'Whip-Smart' as particularly difficult to make because at the time she didn't have many songs that weren't about the music industry, which displeased her manager. In total, 'Whip-Smart' took about one month to record. This propulsive song features Peaches on vocals ("as the inner voice of teenage testosterone," Michael Stipe said). The band hooked up with the Canadian Electro-diva after vocalist Stipe bumped into her in a Berlin bar. Stipe's stream-of-conscious lyrics are summed up by the nonsensical song title. The album was recorded over one day in 2000 with songs written impromptu by band leader Scott McCaughey and sold at concerts in a limited edition of 1,000.
