Don't miss Phoebe Bridgers' Live on KEXP at Home performance last August, 2020, hosted by Cheryl Waters: bit.ly.
This beautiful tune is A cover of Mark Kozelek and Jimmy LaValle's "You Missed My Heart".
Phoebe interviewed Kozelek in 2018 and had this to say...
Phoebe: I have to ask about ‘You Missed My Heart’. When I heard you play it at a show in Koreatown in 2013, it completely floored me. I immediately wished I had written it. How did you come to write it? How long did it take you?
Mark: The first part of the song was literally taken from a nightmare that I had in a hotel room in St. Catherine’s, Ontario. In reality, I was frustrated with a repair man and then dreamed that I pulled a knife out of a drawer and stabbed him and that he turned to me and said “you missed my heart”. The song was written in that moment. I don't recall how much time I spent writing it, but not long. I really love that church in Koreatown.

Bartees Strange will be LIVE on KEXP on Thursday, December 16 at 3:00 PM! He will open for Courtney Barnett at the Paramount Theater on Tuesday, December 14th.
[This cover] "is a great song and one of my favorites from Richard Swift, god rest him," says Bartees Strange. "I was really not sure how to approach the song because normally I don’t do direct covers, but I just love the arrangement and how the song was recorded so much that I just tried to do something that was true to the original but slightly different. I did some hard pan drums but still wanted it to feel very personal." bit.ly

“‘Stranger’ is something of a confrontation between my past and present selves in relationship to my trans identity. I started testosterone about 3 or 4 years ago, and It’s been simultaneously liberating and alarming to note the changes to my mind and body over the years. ‘Stranger’ is an admission to myself that, while I welcome all of those changes—especially the deepening effect of testosterone on my singing and speaking voice—it’s still scary and there is a degree of internal ambivalence to my transition. In transitioning I lost, or gave up, a part of myself. And that is hard to reconcile. ‘Stranger’ is an attempt at some semblance of reconciliation, I guess.” bit.ly
