Formed in 1985, Material Issue was the brainchild of frontman Jim Ellison, who also played guitar, sang lead vocals, and wrote most Material Issue songs.
Written by singer-guitarist Jim Ellison, "Valerie Loves Me" is about a neighbor girl that Ellison had a crush on when he was 11 years old.
The music video for "Valerie Loves Me" was in heavy rotation on MTV's 120 Minutes program in early 1991.

From the 1993 release, 'Altered Beast' is Matthew Sweet's fourth album.
The title of the album is borrowed from the arcade game 'Altered Beast'. Sweet told Spin magazine that the title meant "whatever is inside you that someday might explode, and maybe you don't know it's there", which he found similar to the game, in which "you have to find these little power-up things, and when you eat them you become the Altered Beast, this other creature that's really powerful and violent".

'The Dream' is an album where true-crime-inspired stories and tales of Hollywood and the Chateau Marmont rub shoulders with some of the band’s more personal moments to date. Both beauty and darkness lay side-by-side - often seamlessly merging on the same track, a purposeful choice that pays dividends across the record. “‘Running’ is a song I wrote about a time in my life when I was a part of a toxic friend group where I was the only non-cis person,” Shamir shared. “The song is from the perspective of me now realizing how much it affected my mental health after being a few years removed and realizing how much I was dulling myself down so I did not stick out any more than I already did — and also how that directly made me experience gender dysphoria for the first time ever.”

"Before joining Stephin Merritt and the Magnetic Fields, Anway sang in the Boston band V, which released two singles in the early 1980s. She sang on the Magnetic Fields’ 1991 debut album Distant Plastic Trees (which was recorded in Merritt’s home studio) and its follow-up, 1992’s The Wayward Bus.
