Romania. Fanfare Ciocărlia, a 12 piece Romani Balkan brass band from Zece Prăjini, Romania, put their energetic punky spin on Screamin' Jay Hawkins classic. In Romanian, "Fanfare" means brass band, and Ciocărlia means "lark", the name of a signature Romanian tune imitating the bird.

Sweeden. This is from the third album of Veronica Maggio, a pop artist raised and based in Uppsalla, Sweeden. The title of the album, Satan i gatan, translates to "Satan in the Street", which Wikipedia describes as "a rhyming, idiomatic expression of mild surprise."

The Heliocentrics are a British modern group who blend jazz, hip-hop, electronic music, Ethiopian traditions, and more.
Algeria/France. Beyond covering the classic "Rock the Casbah", Rachid Taha believes he may have inspired the song with an early recording that he gave to the band when they bumped shoulders in Paris in 1981 (read the whole saga here: en.wikipedia.org). His cover injects Rachid's Algerian-influenced style, with sections in French as well as English.

Brazil/France. Emicida, a Brazilian MC known for his improvisation skills, paired with French Nigerian rapper Fefe for this track after they visited each other and noticed similarities between the poor areas where they grew up. Fun note: Emicida's name is a portmanteu of Emcee and homicide, because he was so killer in improv battles.

"One can only imagine the surprise of the villagers of Cachaço, on the Sao Nicolau island of Cabo Verde, when a few months later they woke up and found a ship stranded in their fields, in the middle of nowhere, 8 km from any coastline." This mysterious detour of a cargo ship carrying thousands of instruments, claimed by the locals of Cabo Verde, eventually placed instruments in the hands of children throughout the Island. Argentina. Although well known as a solo artist since her first release in 1996, Juana Molina was first a popular comedian and actress in Argentina. She even had her own TV show in the early 90's. Her first album did not do well in Argentina, partially because of her previous fame, and Juana moved to LA in 1998 to continue her music career.
Brightam, UK-based DJ Max Pashm has been pumping out a variety of Eastern Europe and Greece influenced global fusion music since the 90s. His 2008 album "Never Mind the Balkans" reached #2 on the BBC world music charts
Baeshi Bang reworks music from the 60s from legendary singer Bae Ho. The imaginative quintet takes Bae Ho's classic music and, led by French saxophonist Etienne de la Sayette, reinvents it with sounds both familiar and surprising.
London. "Telemachus is primarily a composer, a sound engineer, and a cloistered pedant deeply immersed in the past," according to their facebook page. The band's frontman relocated to Morocco for two months to record the album, moving away from their hip hop roots and adventuring into the world of North African strings and Atlantic surfing.

Bobby "Vince" Paunetto's didn't start playing vibraphone until the age of 17, but he quickly went on to become a Berklee grad and associate of music legend Cal Tjader. Like Cal, Bobby's primary influences were that of Latin jazz, and he recorded several funktastic albums under the guidance of producer and friend Fred Weinberg. Bobby Paunetto's career was cut tragically short by multiple sclerosis, but his work remains a gem in the 70s Latin jazz annals.
1991 collaboration between Argentinian Tango superstar Astor Piazzolla and the San Francisco based Kronos Quartet. It was one of the last albums Piazolla released before his death in Buenes Aires in 1992, ending a storied musical career that spanned several continents and over 60 decades.
Argentina. Tanghetto, formed circa 2002, is one of the most important players in the neo Tango scene. They describe themselves as "electrotango". Their first release, 2003's Emigrante (electrotango) was a response to Argentina's economic crisis. Since then, they have released an average of one album a year.

New Zealand. The seven-member Fat Freddy's Drop, based in Wellington, NZ, began as a jam group in 1999. They still hold the number one spot for domestic album sales in New Zealand, for 2005's Based on a True Story.
William Onyeabor is one of Nigeria's legendary psych rock figures, releasing several now-classic funk rock albums through the 70s and 80s. He has been extensively covered and praised throughout the modern music community, and told BBC 6 Music in December 2014 that he plans on recording and releasing new music in the near future.
