Hailing from Mali, Amadou Bagayoko and Mariam Doumbia first met as children at Mali’s Institute for the Young Blind—both lost their vision at an early age. It was here that they began performing in the institute’s Eclipse Orchestra. Eventually the couple would marry and began recording together in the 80s.
Over the span of three decades, Amadou (guitar and vocals) and Mariam (vocals) developed an international following having recorded eight full-length albums and toured around the world.
Huun-Huur-Tu are a music group from Tuva, a republic of Russia situated on the Mongolia–Russia border. The most distinctive characteristic of Huun-Huur-Tu's music is throat singing, in which the singers sing both the note (drone) and the drone's overtones, thus producing two or three notes simultaneously. The overtone may sound like a flute, whistle or bird, but is solely a product of the human voice.

Founded in 1970, Orchestra Baobab fused Afro-Cuban rhythm and Portuguese Creole melody with Congolese rumba, high life and a whole gamut of local styles – kickstarting a musical renaissance in their native Senegal, which turned the capital Dakar into one of the world’s most vibrant musical cities.

In 1983 the Reagan CIA used crop dusters to spray the defoliant paraquat with crop dusters to kill the defoliate the marijuana crop. It caused a great deal of hardship on the island. The paraquat spraying was not only killing herbs crop, but killing the bread fruit, bananna and coconut harvest which are staples of a poor person’s diet in Jamaica. “Police In Helipcopter” was the ubiquitous song of the moment in Jamaican that year. Holt’s defiant tone, threatening, “If you continue to burn up the herbs, we’re going to burn down the cane fields.” was an invocation of the Maroon rebellions in the days of slavery. Runaway outlaw slaves often returned at night to burn the fields of their British masters just before the sugar cane harvest during the Maroon rebellion.
