References to a "goon squad" coming to town provoked theories that the song actually concerns fascism, However Bowie played down this interpretation in an interview shortly before the release of Scary Monsters. Biographer David Buckley believed the song "poked fun at the banality of the dance-floor and the style fascists" of the New Romantic movement.
April 2006; their tour ended abruptly that December when the band's bus went off a road, rolled over, and caught fire. Several members of the Coup's crew and backing band, along with touring partner Mr. Lif, were injured, but everyone survived.

As a teenager from Viersen, Germany, Lauber played with a handful of indie garage bands before submitting fully to the techno scene in Cologne, where he was roommates with Kompakt signees Coma. Soon after, Lauber became a dance music devotee, so much so that, within a few years, he was resident DJ at Kompakt's Total Confusion party alongside Superpitcher and Michael Mayer.
