The Comet Is Coming is a London-based jazz-rock band that incorporates elements of jazz, electronica, funk and psychedelic rock. It is a project of saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings, known for his Sons of Kemet recordings. Band members use the pseudonyms "King Shabaka", "Danalogue", and "Betamax": saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings, keyboardist Dan Leavers, and drummer Max Hallett, respectively. In a 2013 interview Hutchings explained their pseudonyms: "The name of the group comes from a BBC Radiophonic Workshop piece of the same name. Once we heard this piece, with its allusions to sci-fi, cosmic remembrances and general space, it instantly struck a chord. We're exploring new sound worlds and aiming to destroy all musical ideals which are unfit for our purposes so the name stuck."

Nicks is credited for “additional lyrics” on the album. The song is about a moment that is so special, nothing will ever approach its beauty. Stevie Nicks sings that even if she gets to see the seven wonders of the world, it won’t match this moment.

The Crystal Method originally had two members, Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland. While working as a production duo for a rapper, a person named Crystal would handle transportation needs. The rapper repeatedly referred to her method of transportation as "The Crystal Method." The lyrics of the song reflect the frustration and hopelessness of an individual who is struggling to make ends meet and feels trapped in a cycle of money and consumerism. The song was a commercial success and was named the Rolling Stone and NME Single of the Year for 19974. Despite its popularity, the band has not earned any royalties from the song due to a complicated copyright controversy.
