“I was never pleased with myself as an actor and also as a singer. But, I did understand, from the very start working with my father, that when you didn’t have a singer’s voice it’s the little accidents. The breathing, when you’re out of tune sometimes – those little things that make you sound alive. It took me a long time to understand this: that I preferred mistakes to a nice, perfect thing.” - Charlotte Gainsbourg - bit.ly

Dan Vidmar, best known by his stage name Shy Girls, is based out of Portland - "Sometimes I feel like titles just arrive, especially if I silence my mind and listen to the album. And I kept coming back to this aviary theme. I think it was partially that the rhythmic, drum-loopy nature of the album reminded me of wings flapping. But even in a more conceptual sense, to me something about the record feels like a bird in flight." bit.ly

Mayfield sang openly about civil rights and black pride, and was known for introducing social consciousness into African-American music. Having been raised in the Cabrini-Green projects of Chicago, he witnessed many of the tragedies of the urban ghetto first hand, and was quoted saying, "With everything I saw on the streets as a young black kid, it wasn't hard during the later fifties and sixties for me to write my heartfelt way of how I visualized things, how I thought things ought to be." bit.ly

To be given your sight
Hid in a long peaceful night
A nervous bride for your eyes
A fractured smile that soon dies
(Peter Hook on lead vocals)
Everyone's licking up to the new kingpin
Trying to get a way up with the smile
Sing for your supper boy and jump to a finger-click
Ain't my way of living in style
(Watch XTC perform this song from 1989 on The Letterman Show that year: youtu.be)
Midnight creeps so slowly into hearts of men / Who need more than they get
Daylight deals a bad hand to a woman / Who has laid too many bets
The mirror stares you in the face / And says "Baby, uh, uh, it don't work"
You say your prayers though you don't care / You dance and shake the hurt
(Rose Riggins: "The song is an exploration is of times spent at house parties and at discos, when you wanted to be disco queen or king and the spotlight just wouldn't focus on you.")
"Over producer Inflo's steady break beat and surging streaks, she displays command of her punchy rhymes with a cadence so casual it feels as if she could deliver them in her sleep. The track closes the same way it starts: with the pomp and circumstance of booming brass notes. It's a declaration — Little Simz is here and she wants you to feel it. " - n.pr
