Thanks to Kennady for a fabulous Afternoon Show Ibeyi (“twins” in Yoruba) - the French Cuban twin sisters, Naomi and Lisa-Kainde Diaz, daughters of the late Cuban percussionist Angà Diaz. Their music incorporates elements of Yoruba, French and Afro-Cuban, fusing jazz with beats, samples with traditional instruments. Swedish singer Neneh Cherry recorded "Broken Politics" at Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, New York, which was once used by Cherry's stepfather, jazz musician Don Cherry, and makes use of samples from the recordings of Ornette Coleman, a longtime collaborator of Don. Speaking about appearing on the BBC's "Top of the Pops" when she was seven months pregnant: : "I was aware of all the entrapments, being suddenly on my own in the spotlight, not working as part of the collective any more. But I remember standing there pregnant, and feeling charged by it – and proud, and very feminine, very woman. I thought, I'm not going to go away. I'm not going to go away." -- tinyurl.com

Beth Ditto explains how she named this album: "it ended up that I liked Fake Sugar, and I could hear my mom saying it in her Southern accent. I liked the idea of it being bittersweet. I like the words “fake” and “sweet.” I just liked the two words together. Sometimes it’s just that simple. It made me think of glitter. I really like glitter. Garbage drummer Butch Vig said that this song started when their guitarist Steve Marker sampled a drum loop by The Clash. "We started putting down this bass groove over it to try to get something kind of groovacious," said Vig. "And then Duke started playing... Shirley started singing, and the whole song was written in about 30 minutes." The Clash song Butch refers to is "Train in Vain (Stand By Me)," from their 1979 album London Calling. Joe Strummer and Mick Jones, who composed that song, received writing credits on "Stupid Girl" because of the sample.: bit.ly

French trio Yelle covered this track as the second single from their 2007 debut, "Pop Up". The original from French duo Laruence Heller and Hélène Bérard, came out in 1987. Yelle's version appeared in multiple video game soundtracks, and was later covered by Swedish artist Robyn.

TT is a.k.a. Theresa Wayman from the Los Angeles band Warpaint. This song hails back to 90s trip hop with sounds reminiscent of Tricky (especially the album Maxinquaye), Portishead, and Massive Attack. Nick Fulton made the comparison in his interview with TT -- 'not since the genre’s heyday has there been an album so heavily rooted in the sound and impulses that first rattled the global pop charts.' Little Dragon are a Swedish electronic music band from Gothenburg, Sweden, formed in 1996. The band members are Yukimi Nagano (vocals, percussion), Erik Bodin (drums), Fredrik Wallin (bass) and Håkan Wirenstrand (keyboards). -- The band's name was inspired by the "Little Dragon" nickname Nagano earned due to the "fuming tantrums" she used to throw while recording in the studio. It became a hit in 1990 when the British production duo DNA added a beat and released the remix as a bootleg. The contrast between Vega's subtle vocal and the driving dance rhythm meshed unexpectedly well. Of course, DNA didn't ask Vega's permission, and when Suzanne first heard it, she said she wasn't sure whether she should sue them or congratulate them. (She decided against litigation...)
