This track came together while jazz musician Robert Glasper was Artist in Residence at the Kennedy Center earlier this year. "I was so happy to collaborate with D Smoke on this song. He's definitely one of the leading voices in today's new generation of hip hop. He has his feet planted in the soil of real music and comes from a family of amazing musicians and artists. That being said, also shout out to Tiffany Gouché, his cousin who's on the song as well. We want to see everybody shine." bit.ly Check out the video, directed by TL Benton and filmed on stage at the Kennedy Center. youtu.be

Released on this day, in 2019! Each song on “LEGACY! LEGACY!” is named after a black creator. For many tracks, Chicago artist Woods pored over past interviews with her subjects to further get into their minds; in some cases, they were artists she’s taught to her mentees at the literacy nonprofit Young Chicago Authors, where she is the Associate Artistic Director. “I thought of it not so much as writing songs about these people, but thinking of the songs as self-portraits,” she told Pitchfork. “I was looking through the lenses of these different people, their work, things they said.” Read the entire Pitchfork feature where she breaks down each track: pitchfork.com

"In The Memory Librarian: And Other Stories of Dirty Computer, singer-songwriter, actor, fashion icon, futurist, and worldwide superstar Janelle Monáe and an esteemed cohort of collaborating writers bring to the written page the Afrofuturistic world of her critically acclaimed album, exploring how different threads of liberation -- queerness, race, gender plurality and love—become tangled with future possibilities of memory and time in such a totalitarian landscape ... and what the costs might be when trying to unravel and weave them into freedoms." www.harpercollins.com

Koffee writes: "This is a more hardcore, dancehall track dedicated to Jamaica. When I'm away, I miss the warmth - especially in Europe, where it's freezing. But I also miss the people. There's a quote from Martin Luther King. He says, 'In Jamaica, I feel like a human being.' And it's because of the way the people relate to everyone and make you feel. There's a certain warmth to it that I love." www.originalkoffee.com

Chronixx with Inflo on production! "This one is for all the young musicians in Jamaica…we have lost so many of our guiding lights here on the physical plane. We are hurting and longing for the word sound of universal truth. Now we have to feel their essence in our creativity and keep the flame alive in the earth. This one is for our elder musicians. You have woven the fiber of who we are…your honor is our honor. We love you. You are our heroes." -- tinyurl.com

The first song Eva Walker ever played on air!
...
Here's KEXP's own Eva Walker and her brother Cedric live in the KEXP studio in 2019: www.youtube.com -- Eva said, "'The Key of Black' is a response to the violence and murders of American citizens by white supremacists infiltrating the police department. We wanted to write a song that was all emotion. There aren’t any words except for the call-and-response in the middle of the song ('They want us dead'). We’ve been talking about this stuff, we’ve been addressing it—I was at the point where people just had to feel it. So I let the guitar do all of the singing for the majority of the song."
