Indigenous artist Nicholas Galanin's debut as Ya Tseen (“be alive,” and a reference to his Tlingit name Yeil Ya Tseen) is 'Indian Yard', his first album for Sub Pop.
Galanin began working on the record in 2017 while going back and forth between his home in Sitka and Juneau, Alaska, where he was carving a totem pole. The album entwines falling in love and the birth of a child with the urgency of current social and environmental justice movements to tear down destructive systems and build anew.
He shared the concepts with Indian Agent bandmates Zak D. Wass and Otis Calvin III and together they collaborated to build the album alongside longtime collaborator Benjamin Verdoes. During strings of sessions in Sitka and Seattle, a cast of brilliant friends—Shabazz Palaces, Nick Hakim, fellow Indigenous Alaskan singer and songwriter Qacung, to name a few—helped turn 'Indian Yard' into a cataract of intensely current pop wonders.

From Emanuel: "The song is about reconciliation and also celebration, celebrating how strong our women are and how they hold us up. People might think this song was written as a response to the moment right now but it’s saying the exact same thing it was saying when it was written a year ago: ‘I see you, I recognize you, I appreciate you and I love you."

Tomo told us: "I wrote 'On the Way' in response to the shootings of 8 people including 6 Asian women in Atlanta, and the rise in violence against Asians across the nation. I think culturally Asian Americans aren't used to having to center ourselves in the conversation and to stick up for ourselves.
But... we have a right to express our anger and our grief and our fear and sadness, and we have a right to be heard. We have a right to feel safe in our own homes and own places of business and on the streets of our own neighborhoods. We have a right to be treated with dignity and respect as human beings. That's the message of the song. We belong here."
