Last Friday marked the official release of Beach House’s latest album, Once Twice Melody, out via Sub Pop Records. Sound & Vision’s assistant producer Roddy Nikpour brings us this review of Once Twice Melody. bit.ly Beach House will perform a sold out show at The Paramount Theatre on Sunday, April 3rd. Victoria Legrand spoke about her and bandmate Alex Scally’s songwriting process: "It’s like this stain and it’s coming out because I hear these tones and these chords and these notes, and they make me feel like crying or they make me completely euphoric. That’s the thing that hasn’t changed, but I think it’s become amplified. And that is why I don’t think we’re done making records." bit.ly

“I was experiencing some kind of crisis at the time of writing ‘Better Each Day’ and if I remember correctly, it was a ‘writing music’ one,” vocalist and bassist Kathryn McCaughey elaborated on the track. “There are times when songs come streaming out of you as though they wrote themselves into existence, and other times it can be as challenging as getting two purebred Persian cats to mate. I was sitting in our producer’s studio when he suggested I might like a little jingle he wrote for a commercial that never got used. I thought it was dope and voila, this song was born. One day you’re punk as fuck and then next you’re playing old unused car commercial jingles.” Support the artist here: nobro.bandcamp.com

Yuuki, who penned the lyrics, says of this song: “Sometimes, no one empathizes with you. But is that really a bad thing? I don’t want to make my thing, or someone else’s thing, something to be ashamed of. Because our ‘differences’ may not be our enemies. I wish we could love each other’s little differences and little similarities entirely –that’s the hope behind this song.” chaiofficial.bandcamp.com

The idea for the song came from Eric Stewart saying to his wife that if he kept saying "I Love You" over and over, it wouldn't mean anything even though he did love her. He recalled to The Guardian: "I met this gorgeous girl called Gloria at Halifax town hall. I was 18. She was 16. Three years later, we got married. A few years after that, Gloria told me: 'You don't say 'I love you' much anymore.' I told her that, if I said it all the time, it would sound glib. But I started wondering how I could say it without using those actual words. So 'I'm not in love' became a rhetorical conversation with myself – and then a song." youtu.be

UK duo Let’s Eat Grandma announced in November the forthcoming release of their third album and “Happy New Year” is our latest preview. Rosa Walton of the band said of the track Walton said in a statement: “I wrote ‘Happy New Year’ after a breakdown between [Jenny Hollingworth and me] that lasted for a long period of time, to communicate to her how important she is to me and how our bond and care for each other goes much deeper than this difficult time. I used the setting of New Year as both an opportunity for reflection, looking back nostalgically through childhood memories that we shared, and to represent the beginning of a fresh chapter for us. I’d been struggling to come to terms with the fact that our relationship had changed, but as the song and time progresses I come to accept that it couldn’t stay the way it was when we were kids forever, and start to view it as a positive thing – because now we have been able to grow into our own individual selves.” Two Ribbons is out on April 8th via Transgressive Records.

Playing in LA since the early 60s, the band – then called Nightshift – was spotted by ex-Animals singer Eric Burdon at the decade’s end and they became his backing band.
