It was this day in 1973 that Gram Parsons died of a morphine overdose at age 23. He almost single-handedly created country-rock with The International Submarine Band, The Byrds (arranging/guiding their classic Sweetheart of The Rodeo) and The Flying Burrito Brothers and as a solo artist created a vision of country music which incorporated elements of folk and soul, inspiring the genesis of the Alt-country and Americana genres nearly 20 years after he died. Emmylou Harris kick-started her long and illustrious career playing in his band, and an inspiration, close friend (and fellow chemical refreshment enthusiast) of Keith Richards. An American music legend.
