Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda’s devotion to spirituality was the central purpose of the final four decades of her life, an often-overlooked awakening that largely took shape during her four-year marriage to John Coltrane and after his 1967 death. The songs featured on the Luaka Bop release have been culled from the four cassettes that Alice recorded and released between 1982 and 1995. Luaka Bop teamed with Alice’s children to find the original master tapes in the Coltrane archive. The recordings were prepared for re-mastering by the legendary engineer Baker Bigsby (Ornette Coleman, Sun Ra, John Coltrane), who had overseen the original sessions in the 80s and 90s. www.luakabop.com

As founders of the legendary Tribe Records, Phil Ranelin and Wendell Harrison led a Jazz underground renaissance in Detroit, forming a model for creative independence that is still followed today. “It was great working with Phil and Wendell, they definitely set the blueprint”, says Muhammad. Jazz is Dead Series 2 begins with 'Jazz Is Dead 11'. For Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, collaborating with music icons and personal heroes is a dream come true. As Younge notes, "A lot of the luminaries have been forgotten, and we want to get people excited again. For me, there is nothing more rewarding than that.” jazzisdead.co jazzisdead.bandcamp.com

New Music!! The latest release from Grammy-winning guitarist, producer and Black Pumas co-founder, Adrian Quesada, serves as a celebration of the super funky, slightly delirious and deeply soulful sounds of balada music that transcended the cultural boundaries of Latin America throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s. Quesada has penned a love letter to that golden era through Boleros Psicodélicos, a stunning album that lovingly recreates the specificity of the balada sound, adding a stellar list of guest vocalists, intriguing contemporary touches and just a hint of irony. adrianquesada.bandcamp.com

New Music! The debut album from queer UK artist Poppy Ajudha! “There are so many boxes we put ourselves in; I want us all to break out of them. We are in an era of so much information and I feel the weight that young people take on because we are the generation bombarded with global politics and a million causes that need fighting for. This calls for better understanding around mental health and a society that nurtures us rather than demands of us everything we have until all that is left is our Demons. Every song on this album touches on these issues because they are all I think about everyday, all I see around me in my friends and my family. I hope it flips a switch in your mind, like it did for mine.” www.poppyajudha.co.uk

New music! Debut album from East London MC, Jeshi. “Universal Credit is me taking back two words that often mean embarrassment for people and trying to give a new life to that through my truth. This isn’t about trying to be the cool guy or tell you about how perfect life is—this is about really diving to places I haven’t been and giving a real honest portrayal of it all and holding up the mirror to what I see around me; the good, bad and ugly. If Universal Credit is what the government gives those of us going through a hard time, here’s my flip on that. This is Universal Credit—from me to you.” jeshi.bandcamp.com

New Music! 'Meridian Brothers & El Grupo Renacimiento' excavates the forgotten sounds of the fantastical 1970s salsa dura group El Grupo Renacimiento. The group identifies as “B-class” salsa whose music explores human struggles in the urban city landscape, with themes such as police brutality, social marginalization, and addiction. Columbian 5-piece Meridian Brothers collaborated with El Grupo Renacimiento in Bogota's Isaac Newton studios to capture their "fantasy salsa dura” sound. Although the group came out of myth, its members have been created in spirit. Embodied by Meridian Brothers and depicted in the graphic creations of illustrators Glenda Torrado and Mateo Rivano, the members of El Grupo Renacimiento have now come to life. meridianbrothers.bandcamp.com

NEW MUSIC!! from Brazilian artist Sessa! His forthcoming release Estrela Acesa (which translates as Burning Star), is out June 24! Sessa's songs are sung in Portuguese, with visceral, sensual lyrics in the vein of Caetano Veloso, and the melodic flourishes of Jobim. However, the music gets a deliberate minimalist treatment rarely found in contemporary Brazilian music, more reminiscent of the bareness of Leonard Cohen, with touches of tropicalia and free jazz. In a statement, Calexico’s Joey Burns said of the new album: "El Mirador is dedicated to family, friends and community. The pandemic highlighted all the ways we need each other, and music happens to be my way of building bridges and encouraging inclusiveness and positivity. That comes along with sadness and melancholy, but music sparks change and movement." pitchfork.com Calexico was live in the KEXP studio with Miss Ashley on Sunday - subscribe to our YouTube channel to be the first to hear when video from that session is up! www.youtube.com

"Tom's Diner" originated as an a cappella track on Suzanne Vega's 1987 release 'Solitude Standing'. It became a hit in 1990 when the British production duo DNA added a beat and released the remix as a bootleg. The contrast between Vega's subtle vocal and the driving dance rhythm meshed unexpectedly well. The DNA remix version was included in the 1991 album of Vega remixes 'Tom's Album'. Video! youtu.be
