Happy birthday Jimmy Cliff! 'The Harder They Come' is the soundtrack album to the 1972 film of the same name. The heart of the soundtrack comes from performances by the film's star, reggae singer Jimmy Cliff. Only the title track "The Harder They Come" was recorded by Cliff specifically for the soundtrack, which also included three earlier songs by Cliff.

Singer/Songwriter, Producer, and Visual Artist Alewya has teamed up with drummer, Moses Boyd, on this new single. Boyd recounted in an interview that they “made ‘The Code’ within minutes of jamming together and it was just that, seamless”. Alewya herself said of working with Boyd that “Moses has a way of understanding musical language and weeding it out of you — I was truly grateful for it. 'The Code' is essentially a song sung by the observer in me observing the shadow of me. Captures what we as a collective and individually are going through — an intense dark night of the soul."

1956 recording of "Bye Bye Blackbird." Included John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on double bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drumset. 'Cool & Collected' is a compilation album of tracks by Miles Davis recorded from 1955 through 1984.

In honor of Gil Scott-Heron, born today. Maurice Bottomley of PopMatters complimented the album's incorporation of "ballads, poetry, jazz solos, Latin breaks and a hip funkiness", stating "It is raw, passionate and powerful, and at all times the rhythmic pulse and the solo explorations complement the lyrical wizardry." According to Bottomley, 'It's Your World' features Scott-Heron, Jackson, and backing ensemble The Midnight Band "at their collective peak" and that it "functions both as a document of a particular historical moment and as a fresh musical experience today".

James Thomas Ramey aka Baby Huey named himself after the giant cartoon duckling. He was the frontman for Baby Huey & the Babysitters. They never took the time to record an album, but Curtom Records released one in 1971 - 'The Baby Huey Story: The Living Legend' - after Ramey's premature death at 26. The album would go on to be influential in the development of hip hop music.

John Lennon wrote this song for Timothy Leary's campaign for governor of California against Ronald Reagan. The campaign’s slogan was “Come Together,” a reference to the I Ching as well as an invitation to join Leary’s political party and Lennon thought that was a pretty good place to start. Paul McCartney said that Lennon’s initial version of the song was initially much faster and that it shared multiple similarities to Chuck Berry's “You Can't Catch Me.” The bassist says that he suggested slowing the song down and making it a little more funky. groovyhistory.com
