Bronski Beat formed in 1983. All members of the band were openly gay and their songs reflected this, often containing political commentary on gay-related issues. The trio were unhappy with the inoffensive nature of contemporary gay performers and sought to be more outspoken and political.

The official music video for M.I.A.’s “Bad Girls” was filmed in the Moroccan city of Quarzazate. It was purposely made to support the famous “Women to Drive Movement“. This was a campaign organized by women in Saudi Arabia to give women in the country the rights to drive vehicles. It should be noted that prior to June 2018, women living in Saudi Arabia were prohibited from driving motor vehicles.
