"The Brooklyn-based group TV on the Radio mix post-punk, electronic, and other atmospheric elements in such a creative way that it only makes sense that their core duo, vocalist Tunde Adebimpe and multi-instrumentalist/producer David Andrew Sitek, are both visual artists as well as musicians. Adebimpe is a graduate of NYU's film school and specializes in stop-motion animation, which his Brothers Quay-like video for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs single "Pin" amply demonstrates. He is also a painter, as is Sitek, who also produced the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Machine EP and their full-length Fever to Tell." goo.gl "Dual guitars and harmonic voices orbit a warm melody, swimming through atmospheric echoes. "A rubber band is the perfect picture to fit Swedish electronic outfit Little Dragon. Up to this point, the band has been carving a unique sound that occupies a haunting modern space somewhere between historical influences like Massive Attack and Bjork. After singer Yukumi Nagano made an appearance on the 2010 Gorillaz album, Plastic Beach, 2011’s Ritual Union saw Little Dragon gain some well deserved critical and commercial awareness, with well loved singles like 'Shuffle a Dream' and 'Nightlight' that bounced between dance music and downtempo with grace and ease." Here at the station, we have a bit of a soft spot for Junius, and understandably so. Aside from a gentle and forthcoming manner, he also possesses the most self-deprecating and off-hand sense of humour. From our review of his performance at Iceland Airwaves last week: "This lanky ginger haired songster is a bit of an enigma, with no album and scant online presence. Unnar Gísli Sigurmundsson, his given name, began performing music a bit later in life. He was apparently kicked out of music school as a youth and thought he would never be a professional musician. But he picked up the guitar again later in his 20s and found a nascent font of sonic creativity. Listeners who joined us at the Reykjavik Calling show at Neumos in October will be surprised to discover the full band sound of Júníus Meyvant. Solo, he is a sparse acoustic folk act. But with his ten piece band he has a velvety soul groove." blog.kexp.org

Former frontman and lead singer for Wire. "Newman was born in Salisbury, England, in 1954 and attended Watford School of Art, where he studied under Peter Schmidt. At Watford, he formed Wire with Bruce Gilbert in 1976 and the band quickly emerged as one of British punk's more innovative, intelligent acts. Having evolved at a breathtaking pace over three albums that were among the period's most influential records (Pink Flag, Chairs Missing, and 154), the group went on hiatus in early 1980." www.allmusic.com/artist/colin-newman-mn0000113424/biography Click here for an exclusive interview with Newman for DRILL Music Festival: http://blog.kexp.org/2013/11/20/kexp-suggests-drill-seattle-w-wire-interview-with-colin-newman/

"Few bands generate as much excitement among KEXP listeners as alt-J. We followed their stratospheric rise from the beginning and even helped stoke the fire of the early buzz by which they burned brightly. The anticipation of their sophomore album was almost unbearable, though, particularly following the departure of bassist and multi-instrumentalist Gwil Sainsbury and the pressures of improving upon such a beloved and award-winning debut. But the wait paid off. In true alt-J fashion, the band defied expectations with a Miley Cyrus sample on their first single and a rocking Black Keys-ian riff on their second, and the album itself is refreshingly unpredictable with its more subdued, organic and atmospheric arrangements." "After Mick Jones was fired from the Clash in 1983, he formed Big Audio Dynamite (B.A.D.) one year later to continue the more experimental funk elements of the Clash's Combat Rock. The group's original incarnation included Jones, video artist and Clash associate Don Letts (effects and vocals), Greg Roberts (drums), Dan Donovan (keyboards), and Leo 'E-Zee Kill' Williams (bass). "FF captures the weird, disorienting mixture of distortion, rage, and quiet melody that made records like MBV’s Isn’t Anything so magical. On other tracks, they tend towards the unsettled but melodic noise punk of mid to late 80s Sonic Youth. Yes, these are some pretty big claims, but FF seriously deserves it." When noted by the interviewer he heard that the band left mistakes on Here and Nowhere Else on purpose, Dylan Baldi responded, "I mean, it’s not so much mistakes, but the sound of the band still learning the songs while we’re recording them. I like to do that. I like to make everything really last-minute so when we’re recording, we’re still figuring out the music because the sound of the band on record screwing things up is more interesting than the sound of like a perfect band. I don’t really get excited about things that are perfect whether it’s music or people. Anything that’s completely perfect bores me so I like to have that little bit of grit, that little bit of confusion in the songs themselves. It becomes a little more human in a way." goo.gl And here, download your own copy of "I'm Not a Part of Me" right here, right now: blog.kexp.org

San Francisco's Cronin, who holds an BFA in Music, notes, "A lot of peoples’ criticisms about people that go to music school or study music is that you lose that immediacy or joy of just playing guitar. I’ve found that it doesn’t apply, though. 95% of people I play music with have no idea how to write, or have no formal training to read music on paper. It really doesn’t matter. While I was in school, I was in a hardcore punk band, and I was doing that with the art school kids. Then we would go to class the next day and study theory. I was pleasantly surprised it didn’t affect me that way. It just opened up another line of thinking, and criticizing my own music, and finding effective ways to translate what I wanted to translate. I’m sure it affects some people in that way, like they can’t listen to Black Flag again after studying Bach, but it didn’t have that effect. It made everything better." goo.gl Here he is in our studio back last year: goo.gl

Today is Brendan Benson's birthday! Of the naissance of The Raconteurs, Jack White recalls, "Brendan said, 'I’ve got this song that needs some lyrics.' I took a listen to it and it was the music for 'Steady, As She Goes.' So I wrote the lyrics for it and we recorded it, though it was kind of more reggae-sounding at that point. We really loved it and just kept playing it, so we said, 'Maybe it’s time to do this band we keep talking about.' That song really was the trigger." www.uncut.co.uk/the-raconteurs/interview-jack-white-and-brendan-benson-feature Next, you can follow that fun with our review of their show with the Kills way back when: http://blog.kexp.org/2008/09/24/live-review-the-kills-the-raconteurs-at-wamu-theater-919/

"Pearls Negras are the teenage Brazilians bringing baile-funk back. The trio hail from the winding streets of Vidigal, a hillside favela overlooking Rio de Janeiro’s coveted Copacabana and Ipanema locales from its vantage point high up the Morro Dois Irmãos. Directed by the 32-year-old carioca (Rio local) director Kayhan Ozmen, the braggadocio-filled film spotlights Mariana Alves, Alice Coelho and Jennifer Loiola’s brand of hip-hop and raw Latin R&B, first dropped earlier this year on their Biggie Apple Mixtape. 'They represent the new Brazilian youth who are born in slums, but now have access to the world via internet and social media,' says Ozmen of the 16- and 17-year-old stars. Reverend Joseph Simmons, aka Rev. Run or DJ Run, turns 50 today! "I kind of lost the vigor for recording for a while. I didn't really care about it anymore. I put out a new pair of sneakers called the Phat Classics with my brother and they sold like a million pairs! At that point my mind was like, 'You know what, I've said enough, I've created enough!' I was ready to say 'Forget music!' I'd still do a little bit, like if you would call me for a remix, then I wouldn't mind, but I wasn't going to put my focus on making more Run DMC albums. But then it just seemed like the more I would run from Run DMC saying 'It's over, I'm fine," the more opportunities would be coming at me. Opportunities to record, opportunities to do big tours. Spiritually it didn't feel like it was over all of a sudden. It seems like we're getting more offers to do things like this big tour and putting our hands in the RockWalk. "The Blind Shake have found a way to mix garage punk, surf music, and noise rock into one hard-hitting three-piece package, and do it all without the benefit of a bass player (though the bandmembers insist that they're not anti-bass so much as they're "pro mid-range"). The Blind Shake were formed by brothers Jim Blaha and Mike Blaha, who were born in St. Paul, Minnesota, spent much of their childhood in Lake City, Minnesota, and finally settled in the big city of Minneapolis. The Blaha brothers became serious rock & roll fans in their teens, and not long after the turn of the century, they decided to form a band. Influenced by the sound of a fellow Minneapolis band they liked, VAZ, Jim and Mike hoped to replicate their guitar tone by featuring both a baritone guitar (played by Mike) and a regular six-string (played by Jim) in their lineup, which also settled the issue of who would play bass, an instrument that interested neither sibling..." Of MCR, Don Yates writes, "This young British band’s debut album is an impressive set of lo-fi garage-punk inflected with old-school British punk and ‘50s rock ‘n’ roll, combining primal guitar riffs, energetic rhythms, snarling vocals and catchy song hooks." From our Featured Song of the Day post, "Ming City Rockers hail from the fine English town of Immingham. Together with near neighbor Grimsby, 'Ming City' is part of the largest port by tonnage in the UK, and serves as one of many midpoints for rail and road transit between London, Edinburgh, and Rotterdam. In other words, its a spot on a map, and it’s not flashy. "The first thing that stands out about Holy Esque is lead singer Pat Hynes’ Ellery James Roberts-meets-Scott Hutchinson vocals, and but the second, more important aspect of the Glasgow quartet’s sound is how his bandmates match his ramshackle-yet-emotive performances with an equally as ferocious brand of post-punk. Formed in 2011 by Hynes, keyboardist/guitarist Keir Reid, guitarist Hugo McGinley, and drummer Ralph McClure, the band wasted no time differentiating themselves from the folk-indebted bands that dominated the scene... Since then, the band has sporadically released singles and played gigs at CMJ, SXSW, and most notably, Glastonbury 2013, and earlier this year, the band ventured to Copenhagen to begin work on their full-length debut. 'Silences,' a presumed taste of the aforementioned EP, shimmers with a new wave rhythm, but Hynes’ ragged yell and piercing guitars add a spike to the song’s shine." blog.kexp.org

The band found greater exposure a few years later, when Nirvana covered their tracks on Incesticide ('Son of a Gun,' 'Molly’s Lips') and on MTV Unplugged in New York ('Jesus Don’t Want Me for a Sunbeam'). Yeah, they still published magazines about music back in the early ’90s. I’d been dispatched to the offices of Geffen Records to interview British industrial dance act Nitzer Ebb about their new album, Ebbhead. As we got settled in, the label publicist asked if I needed anything else. I mentioned that I was going on a long trip the next day and could sure use some new music to fend off boredom during the plane ride. Maybe he could slide me a promo copy of Guns N’ Roses? Calling for 'Revolution Girl Style Now,' the group's fiercely polemical and anthemic music helped give rise to a newly empowered generation of women in rock, presaging the dominance female artists would enjoy throughout the decade. Bikini Kill formed in the late '80s at Olympia's liberal Evergreen College, where students Kathleen Hanna, Tobi Vail, and Kathi Wilcox first teamed to publish a feminist fanzine, also dubbed Bikini Kill. As long as that keeps me happy the rest is... I don't want to say icing on the cake, but all of us would be doing this stuff regardless of whether we were playing in front of people or not. Black Mountain have more fine details; there are five people and some of our tastes are similar and some are just completely opposite. With Pink Mountaintops it's usually trying — whether it's recording or for a show — to keep it loose and raw, and not go over things too much. "The local darlings’ catchy, ebullient pop jams are most certainly youthful but far from anything that could be considered sinister. Led by Troy Nelson and Mackenzie Mercer, the band broke out in 2011 with a vocal chemistry that buzzes in your ears with the pleasing oohs and ahhs of something that is simply meant to be, like two voices separated at birth. Nelson and Mercer’s harmonies are what leave listeners swooning, but it’s the band’s jangly, buoyant, and delightfully precise instrumentation that gives their pop tunes their unrelenting propulsiveness and energy, leaving listeners with a spirited sense that everything is going to be all right." "Specializing in rollicking but slightly shambolic tales of hard living and questionable behavior, the Spider Bags were first formed in New Jersey by guitarist and vocalist Dan McGee and bassist and guitarist Gregg Levy. The two met in the mid-'90s when Levy, still a teenager, was playing with a band that needed a new singer, and the vocalist they recruited brought McGee along to play second guitar. Levy and McGee discovered they shared an enthusiasm for Jimi Hendrix, acoustic blues, and marijuana, and while Levy's band proved short-lived, he and McGee became fast friends. Levy and McGee ran with a hard-partying crowd where alcoholism and serious drug abuse became common, and after a few of their friends succumbed to their habits, Levy retreated first to college, then to marriage, parenthood, and a nine-to-five job, playing in bands with friends as a hobby." www.allmusic.com

If you’re unfamiliar with The Sonics’ legacy, take note: they started in the early 60′s what would evolve into American punk of the 70′s and 80′s, grunge of the 90′s, and the garage sound we continue to hear today. Some critics even cite them as the first punk band ever! Undoubtedly, their hard sound and occasionally dark and eerie songs like “Psycho,” “The Witch,” and “Strychnine” inspired the punks and other rockers to follow, many of whom cut their teeth playing those songs. While attending UCLA in 1970, the Maels formed their first group, Halfnelson, which featured songwriter Ron on keyboards and Russell as lead vocalist; the band was rounded out by another pair of brothers, guitarist Earle and bassist Jim Mankey, and drummer Harley Feinstein. Halfnelson soon came to the attention of Todd Rundgren, who helped land the group a contract with Bearsville and produced their self-titled 1971 debut. "If you played 'North Side Gal,' today’s featured song, by JD McPherson (or any of McPherson’s other songs, for that matter) for someone and told them that they had to bet their life on whether it was recorded in 1958 or 2010, it’s a safe bet that almost every person polled would end up dead. His debut album, Signs & Signifiers, was released in October of 2010 and is full of throwback 'rock ‘n roll' that could easily serve as the soundtrack to a night of cruising down Main Street in the convertible before hitting up a drive-in movie. McPherson seems like such a product of the ’50s generation, that when reading about his humble beginnings in Oklahoma as the son of a farmer and a preacher, I was taken aback when his bio casually mentioned Talking Heads and Bad Brains as influences." blog.kexp.org
