"Although not as well as known as some of their peers (the Clash, the Sex Pistols), first wave U.K. punk rockers Generation X burst onto the scene at the same time as the others. And while they enjoyed some moderate success in their homeland, Generation X would become better-known as the launching pad for their singer, Billy Idol, who would go on to achieve great commercial success come the '80s. Originally formed in 1976, Generation X (which was named after a book that focused on battles between the Mods and the Rockers during the '60s) was comprised of guitarist Bob Andrews, bassist Tony James, drummer Mark Laff, and fronted by Idol. The group was eventually signed up by Chrysalis Records, resulting in a self-titled debut album in 1978 (the U.S. and U.K. versions contained different track listings), as Generation X became one of the first punk bands to appear on the popular British TV music program Top of the Pops." http://bit.ly/1voD6OI Help us stay independent! www.kexp.org/donate

"Originally, he didn’t want to do it, but Joseph Arthur was eventually convinced to record Lou, a full album of songs by his friend and mentor, the late Lou Reed. Reluctant to turn the modern legend’s memory into 'an opportunity,' Joseph Arthur approached the songs cautiously, simply, and unplugged — as opposite as he could think to the iconoclast’s style — and found a way to mourn as much as a way 'to hang out with Lou again.'" Watch Joseph Arthur play a collection of Lou Reed covers here in our studio, an event which was only made possible through generous donor support. blog.kexp.org Find out how you can help by calling 1-866-903-5397. "El-P and Killer Mike – it’s a combo that we’ve only known for a year and a half, but feels like it’s been around forever. 'I got paid to make a friend,' said Michael Renders of their work together back in 2012. Though Mike had been killing it on the ATL scene for years (he’s a long time Outkast affiliate and appeared on the Grammy winning track 'The Whole World'), his more than skin deep sense of awareness needed a fresh production mentality to accompany. And what better way to go about this than grab Jaime Meline? El-P’s production career has been one of the driving forces for change and evolution for a decade. Mike’s R.A.P. Music and El’s own Cure For Cancer came out a week apart in May of last year." blog.kexp.org

"The band that made grunge famous was Nirvana. Founding members Kurt Cobain and Krist Novaselic met at a Melvins concert in their hometown of Aberdeen, Washington. By early 1988, they were playing under the name of Nirvana and had developed a cult following in nearby Olympia. Later that year, the new Seattle label Sub Pop released two of the band’s songs as part of their singles series. The record sold out in a flash. That same year they recorded their first full-length studio album, Bleach. Dave Grohl, a drummer from the DC band Scream, joined the group in 1990. In 1991, Nirvana released Nevermind, the album that would make them a household name around the world. Not only was the album certified platinum by the end of the year, but it knocked Michael Jackson’s album Dangerous out of the #1 album slot." "Las Vegas' Shamir evokes '90s house, pop, and R&B with his unique sound, which is further distinguished by a tenor voice so piercing that it flirts with falsetto. Growing up in the city's Northtown area, Shamir Bailey listened to music ranging from rock to jazz and found inspiration in his songwriter aunt. After getting a guitar from his mother, he taught himself to play it (albeit upside down). With his friend Christina Thompson, Bailey formed the indie pop duo Anorexia, who released the 2013 EP Bedroom Songs and also played South by Southwest. He also began writing songs with dance beats, and sent some of his work to writer/producer Nick Sylvester, who helped shape Shamir's new approach into pulsing yet affecting songs that drew favorable comparisons to the likes of Grace Jones and the DFA Records roster." bit.ly If you love hearing eclectic mixes curated by real people, please call 206-903-5397 or 1-866-903-5397 and keep the thoughtful plays coming!

"Since the 2002 single 'Losing My Edge,' LCD Soundsystem has made its distinct clatter onto the scene. Somehow merging obvious computer tones with live pop instrumentation — vocals, keys, percussion, bass and drums. LCD Soundsystem is another name for adventurous New York City producer James Murphy. "Though the new album is called Lost in the Dream, The War on Drugs‘ Adam Granduciel seems like he’s just woken up from one. While it’s only the band’s third LP since forming nine years ago, Lost in the Dream is leaps and bounds ahead of its predecessors, as Granduciel transforms his oft-meandering ambience of navel-gazing Americana into more propulsive and grand arrangements that are no less concerned with personal exploration of emotion but, like private songs writ large, reach their full intensity in the hands of the entire band."
