From what is purportedly The Stroke's first ever interview, Julian Casablancas: "We didn’t sit in the meeting room and say, ‘Let’s do this New York sound’. Little by little, though, I’ve realised that the music you make is totally influenced by your surroundings. The tension in New York definitely translates into what we’re doing... I mean, I love New York. The only thing is, when you’re here, you constantly feel like you’ve got to get out. Human evolution didn’t mean for people to be in a city like this all the time. You get so fucking aggressive about everything. You want to fight all the time, because you’re so pissed off with people living on top of you. That’s what happened when we were walking around earlier. We got into a fucking street fight. It was like attack of the killer midgets..." bit.ly If you love The Strokes, as well as the seminal NY bands which influenced their sound, keep listening to KEXP and please call 1-800-903-5397 to help the magic continue!

"Plenty of fury + abandon here, with the whole thing sounding leaner + meaner than ever. Small sections of beauty scattered throughout. This rocks. I love it. 1-2, 1-3, 2-1, 2-2, 2-4, 3-1, 3-4, 4-1, 4-2, 4-3 are my favs, only 3-2 is a real washout. Confident, sexy + loud." "Misunderstood, mistreated, underrated, and/or just plain unknown, Greg Sage should be mentioned in the first breaths about trailblazing guitarists and U.S. independent music of the '80s and '90s. Since forming his band, Wipers, in Portland, OR, in the late '70s, Sage has been put through the ringer more than enough to justify his hermetic operating methods and attitude. While most of his devout fans consider it a travesty that his name isn't as known as a contemporary like Bob Mould or even an unabashed fan-boy turned legend like Kurt Cobain, Sage would likely retort that it's not for the notoriety that he began making music. Unlike most other musicians who gain inspiration and motivation from watching their favorite stars revel in popularity and idol worship, Sage's inspiration stemmed more from the joy he got from cutting records on his own lathe." http://bit.ly/1KV7c8Z Listeners made Wipers happen here today! Have you seen the jaw-dropping photo on this album cover? "I remember I was walking to work one day and I was listening to the new songs without vocals because I was still working them out before I had to go in and record them. I went to walk along a concrete curb, like one detached from a sidewalk but runs along the street, and while I was balancing I suddenly had this thought of what if this was the edge of a tall building. And then right after that thought I was like 'Dang, that could be a cool record cover'. Up to that point we didn’t really have any ideas for cover art other than we wanted it to involve a person and be in color and have some kind of iconic look to it, something people could remember it by. I thought someone who appears to be losing their balance on the edge of a high rise building could be pretty iconic.” Read on, and see the cover better, here: blog.kexp.org

"Since the 2002 single 'Losing My Edge,' LCD Soundsystem has made its distinct clatter onto the scene. Somehow merging obvious computer tones with live pop instrumentation — vocals, keys, percussion, bass and drums. LCD Soundsystem is another name for adventurous New York City producer James Murphy. Not your average rockstar, James is awkward and geeky, and he is definitely in the groove." http://blog.kexp.org/2010/10/23/saturday-afternoon-artist-lcd-soundsystem/ Thanks to listeners like you, we are able to bring you the groove every day, 24 hours a day, and it wouldn't be possible without your donations. "Roaring out of Brisbane, Australia in 1977 with the punk-era classic "(I'm) Stranded," the Saints, despite going through numerous incarnations, were a part of rock & roll for more than 20 years, thanks mainly to their indefatigable leader (and founder), Chris Bailey. Although they didn't play anything that passes for punk rock after about 1978, and despite extended dormant periods, the Saints never officially broke up, and Bailey always seemed to have another version of the band and another record ready to release. Saints' fans generally fall into two distinct camps: the punk-era fans (up to about 1980) and the mature pop fans, which for American audiences begins with the release of All Fools Day in 1987." http://bit.ly/1PDhTwX Love hearing sweet vintages from far-flung continents? "Although the best-known band of the early Australian punk scene of the late '70s was the Saints, the first band to wave the punk rock flag in the land down under was Radio Birdman. Formed by Australian émigré Deniz Tek (originally from Ann Arbor, MI) and Aussie surfer-turned-vocalist Rob Younger in 1974, Radio Birdman's approach to rock & roll was rooted in the high-energy, apocalyptic guitar rant of the Stooges and MC5, sprinkled liberally with a little East Coast underground hard rock courtesy of Blue Öyster Cult. Their first EP, Burn My Eye, released in 1976, was a great record and still remains a seminal chunk of Aussie punk. Loud and snotty, with Younger bellowing his guts out and Tek on a search-and-destroy mission with his guitar, this was a great debut that set the stage for the impending deluge of Aussie punk bands waiting in the wings." Wrapping up our set from Down Under, Radio Birdman is one of the bands we play and support, and only with help from listeners like YOU!

"In anticipation of the band's appearance at the 1992 Lollapalooza tour, a limited edition of Badmotorfinger was released on June 23, 1992 with a second disc containing the EP Satanoscillatemymetallicsonatas (or SOMMS). The title is a palindrome. This EP includes three covers, a Soundgarden original, and a live song. For its cover of Black Sabbath's 'Into the Void', the original lyrics are replaced by words of protest by Chief Seattle, which fit the meter of the song. At the 1993 Grammy Awards, "Into the Void (Sealth)" received a nomination for Best Metal Performance." bit.ly

"FIDLAR is a skate punk/garage punk band from Los Angeles, California. The band is currently signed to Mom + Pop Music in the US, Wichita Recordings in the UK and Dine Alone Records in Canada. The band's name is an acronym for 'Fuck It Dog, Life's A Risk', a skate mantra gleaned from singer Zac Carper's former roommates, or 'Forget It Dad, Lifes All Right'. Originally, FIDLAR went under the name 'Fuck The Clock', as referenced in their song 'Cheap Beer'. Founding members, Carper and Elvis Kuehn met while working at a recording studio in which Carper was employed as an engineer and Kuehn was an intern. The two started recording songs when the studio was empty and posting the finished products online. Three years after recording their first songs they stepped on stage together with The Black Lips and went on tour with The Hives. In 2012, FIDLAR were named one of Stereogum's '40 Best New Bands of 2012'." bit.ly

"Tell Mama was recorded at the FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, upon the encouragement of Leonard Chess, who successfully convinced James to record the album there. Allmusic reviewer, Bill Dahl praised the album's production, called its sessions, 'skin-tight.' At Muscle Shoals, producers were able to mix her voice in order for it sound stronger on previously-distorted high notes. The album's title track became one of the biggest hits of James's career, becoming her first Top 10 hit in four years and her highest-peaking single on the Billboard Pop chart, reaching #23. It has since been considered one of her all-time classics. The album's cover of Otis Redding's 'Security' also became a major hit, reaching the Top 20 on the R&B singles chart, while also making the Pop Top 40." bit.ly If you love hearing DJ-curated mixes and learning about new bands while revisiting classics, please consider donating to keep the individual strong through community. 206-903-5397!

"The Sonics are an American garage rock band from Tacoma, Washington, originating in the early 1960s. Among the Sonics' contemporaries were the Kingsmen, the Wailers, the Dynamics, the Regents, and Paul Revere & the Raiders. Their aggressive, hard-edged sound has been a major influence on punk, garage, and hard rock music worldwide, and they have been named as inspirations to Nirvana, Bruce Springsteen, the Fall, and other major artists. They played a mixture of garage rock standards ('Louie, Louie', 'Have Love, Will Travel'), early rock and roll ('Jenny, Jenny', 'Skinny Minnie') and original compositions such as 'Strychnine', 'Psycho', and 'The Witch', all based upon simple chord sequences, played hard and fast." bit.ly

"Little Richard is a flamboyant American singer and pianist whose hit songs in the mid 1950s were defining moments in the development of rock ‘n’ roll. Born Richard Wayne Penniman on December 5, 1932, in Macon, Georgia, Little Richard was the third of 12 children. His father, Bud, was a stern man who made his living selling moonshine and didn’t do much to hide his disdain for his son’s early signs of homosexuality. At the age of 13 Richard was ordered to move out of the family home. Richard’s relationship with his father was never repaired. When Richard was 19, his father was shot dead outside a local bar. The childhood that Richard did manage to have was largely shaped by the church. Two of his uncles as well as his grandfather were preachers, and Richard was involved with the church as much as anyone in his family, singing gospel and eventually learning to play the piano." bit.ly Thank you for being our incredible listeners; we can't do this without you!!!
