Anni Sinilahti, who goes by the artist name ALBA, is a singer-songwriter and producer from Finland. Her artist name was inspired by a meeting with an old man whilst travelling through Morocco, who told her that the name would bring her fortune in life. After leaving Finland at the age of 16 to busk in the streets of London, ALBA returned to her home country to work on her solo releases and write for other artists.
Mikko Joensuu (once with Helsinki band Joensuu 1685) marries Scandinavian folk style with Armenian and American country. Ja Ja Ja, UK says "Mikko’s wonderful rich vocal tone brings to mind classic singer-songwriters such as Neil Young and contrasts with the delicate electro backdrop and cosmic bleeps, which are subtle nods to psychedelia." www.mikkojoensuu.net

Wolf Parade's Spencer Krug teams up with Finnish prog-rock band Siinai on this album that ranges from driving, anthemic rock to dark, atmospheric ballads. Yet another connection to Mikko Joensuu who we heard earlier: Krug met the band Joensuu 1685 when on tour with Wolf Parade in 2009, learning they needed a vocalist. During the period of six weeks, the group went through some incredible adventures in the homeland of Voodoo, rehearsed daily, played three shows and recorded an album. Later the album was completed and mixed in Finland, and it's release on May 7th 2013 was followed by a tour of 19 concerts in Finland’s major festivals.

When recording this (their debut album) Marko Nyberg recorded around twenty musicians and singers for use on the album—each of them a good friend of Nyberg's and all Helsinki-based. "Mermaid Avenue" consists of previously unheard lyrics written by American folk singer Woody Guthrie, put to music written and performed by Billy Bragg and Wilco. The name comes from a song "Mermaid's Avenue", written by Guthrie. This was also the name of the street in Coney Island, New York on which Guthrie lived. According to American Songwriter Magazine, "The Mermaid Avenue project is essential for showing that Woody Guthrie could illuminate what was going on inside of him as well as he could detail the plight of his fellow man".

Fun fact: The song became popular after being featured on the MTV show Beavis and Butt-head, nearly a year after the album's release. The band describe the song: "With its chiming pedal steel chorus breaks and seemingly nonsensical lyrics, the song entered into the realms of novelty hit. It's a happy little ditty about strange people and their individual idiosyncrasies, with pretty melodies laced throughout and punctuated by trademark moments of crunching but still harmonious noise."

Originally recorded by Johnny Mathis for the 1957 film of the same name, this song has been recorded many times, including twice by Nina Simone, first on the live album Nina Simone at Town Hall (1959) and then in a studio recording included on Wild Is the Wind (1966). David Bowie recorded a version of it for his 1976 album Station to Station. Bowie was an admirer of Simone’s style, and after meeting her in Los Angeles in 1975, was inspired to record the song for this album.

The 32nd annual induction ceremony will take place on Friday, April 7, 2017 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Pearl Jam is in good company with the other performers nomiated this year: Joan Baez, Electric Light Orchestra, Journey, Pearl Jam, Tupac Shakur, and Yes.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame says "His naked emotion and fearless personal revelation were a direct influence on MCs from Eminem to Kendrick Lamar." and 50 Cent said “Every rapper who grew up in the ’90s owes something to Tupac.” Rolling Stone paid tribute to Shakur as one of the “100 Greatest Artists Of All Time.”
