Anni Sinilahti, who goes by the artist name ALBA, is a singer-songwriter and producer from Finland. Her artist name was inspired by a meeting with an old man whilst travelling through Morocco, who told her that the name would bring her fortune in life. After leaving Finland at the age of 16 to busk in the streets of London, ALBA returned to her home country to work on her solo releases and write for other artists.

Mikko Joensuu (once with Helsinki band Joensuu 1685) marries Scandinavian folk style with Armenian and American country. Ja Ja Ja, UK says "Mikko’s wonderful rich vocal tone brings to mind classic singer-songwriters such as Neil Young and contrasts with the delicate electro backdrop and cosmic bleeps, which are subtle nods to psychedelia." www.mikkojoensuu.net

Wolf Parade's Spencer Krug teams up with Finnish prog-rock band Siinai on this album that ranges from driving, anthemic rock to dark, atmospheric ballads. Yet another connection to Mikko Joensuu who we heard earlier: Krug met the band Joensuu 1685 when on tour with Wolf Parade in 2009, learning they needed a vocalist. In 2012 they collaborated on the "Heartbreaking Bravery" release. This is their 2nd collaboration. soundcloud.com

Their description of themselves is amazing: "After drinking way too much coffee and playing with their musical toys together, the slightly jazz, glitch and acid influenced pair decided to join forces. They merged into creating sounds to summon the stories of the dead and the unheard into a somewhat haunting mixture of alternative pop, nu-trip hop and electronica." www.wearephantom.com

Finnish afro-beat! In January 2012 three musicians from Helsinki, Finland followed their dream and travelled to Benin, West Africa. They hooked up with virtuoso singer/percussionist Noël Saïzonou, called up the best musicians from Cotonou, and so Helsinki-Cotonou Ensemble was born. www.helsinkicotonouensemble.com During the period of six weeks, the group went through some incredible adventures in the homeland of Voodoo, rehearsed daily, played three shows and recorded an album. Later the album was completed and mixed in Finland, and it's release on May 7th 2013 was followed by a tour of 19 concerts in Finland’s major festivals.

The band's bio asks "Is there such a thing as too many guitarists in a band? Finland's Teksti-TV 666 think not. Formed three years ago, things have escalated rather quickly for the seven-headed shoegazing kraut-punk monster. Armed with no less than five (at times six) electric guitars, Teksti-TV 666 are nowadays one of the most in-demand live acts in their native Finland, and select performances abroad have caused a bit of a storm, as well... Teksti-TV 666 is a band built on contradictions. It is as if Neu! performed Ramones songs; it is a shoegazing Hellacopters; it is a heavy-but-soft wall of noise, a colorful slow-motion explosion." teksti-tv666.bandcamp.com

When recording this (their debut album) Marko Nyberg recorded around twenty musicians and singers for use on the album—each of them a good friend of Nyberg's and all Helsinki-based. He explains the album's "vibe": "Every track is designed to be a warm breeze to counter the chill of daily life, whether you live in cold climes or not. All moments from life become part of the music. Husky Rescue reflects our background in Helsinki where the winter nights are so cold and long while the summer is hot and short, but oh so sweet. It's melancholic music but there is always hope. Husky Rescue's music is like the first snow on the ground when you can still see the green grass through the snow. It's like spring's sunbeam after the long, dark, sunless winter time." www.husky-rescue.com

"Mermaid Avenue" consists of previously unheard lyrics written by American folk singer Woody Guthrie, put to music written and performed by Billy Bragg and Wilco. The name comes from a song "Mermaid's Avenue", written by Guthrie. This was also the name of the street in Coney Island, New York on which Guthrie lived. According to American Songwriter Magazine, "The Mermaid Avenue project is essential for showing that Woody Guthrie could illuminate what was going on inside of him as well as he could detail the plight of his fellow man".

Fun fact: The song became popular after being featured on the MTV show Beavis and Butt-head, nearly a year after the album's release. The band describe the song: "With its chiming pedal steel chorus breaks and seemingly nonsensical lyrics, the song entered into the realms of novelty hit. It's a happy little ditty about strange people and their individual idiosyncrasies, with pretty melodies laced throughout and punctuated by trademark moments of crunching but still harmonious noise."

Sometimes you've just got to take a walk on the wild side. Fun fact: David Bowie produced this album!
...
Originally recorded by Johnny Mathis for the 1957 film of the same name, this song has been recorded many times, including twice by Nina Simone, first on the live album Nina Simone at Town Hall (1959) and then in a studio recording included on Wild Is the Wind (1966). David Bowie recorded a version of it for his 1976 album Station to Station. Bowie was an admirer of Simone’s style, and after meeting her in Los Angeles in 1975, was inspired to record the song for this album.
