Sudan Archives took up violin in the fourth grade, eventually teaching herself how to play the instrument by ear. When she discovered the violin-playing style of Northeast Africa, her eyes opened to the possibilities of the instrument. "The way they played it was different from classical music. I resonated with the style, and I was like, 'Maybe I can use this style with electronic music,'" she says.
Stevens has cited the poem "Chicago" by Carl Sandburg as an influence on this track.

Remy Ongala was a Tanzanian guitarist and singer. Ongala was born in Kindu near the Tanzanian border, in what was the Belgian Congo at the time, and now is the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Ongala died on December 13,2010 at his home in Dar es Salaam. Posthumously, he received the Hall of Fame trophy at the 2012 Tanzania Music Awards.
