"Z" features a much spacier and more polished sound than previous My Morning Jacket albums, making heavy use of synthesizers throughout and incorporating reggae and dub influences. The heavy reverb that was a defining characteristic of the band's prior recordings is largely absent. The songs on the album are more focused and shorter compared to the band's previous albums.

This is their first album not to feature founding member and bassist Walter Gervers since he amicably left the group in 2018.
The idea for Baltimore indie outfit Lower Dens formed when Jana Hunter, at that time performing as a solo artist under her own name, grew tired of touring and decided to take a hiatus from the road. For her final tour before this planned hiatus, she put together a backing band. The enjoyment Hunter got from playing with a band versus performing as a solo artist gave her the idea to form Lower Dens
"The Photo Album" was the first Death Cab for Cutie album to feature charting songs, with "A Movie Script Ending" also becoming the first of three songs by the band to eventually feature on the television show The O.C.. Caveman is an American indie rock band based in Brooklyn, New York. The band recorded their first studio album in 2011. Although originally self-released, the album was re-released by Fat Possum Records in 2012.
The Love Language began after frontman Stuart McLamb's first band, The Capulets, broke up. Following a breakup with his girlfriend, McLamb went on a serious drinking binge and then retreated to his parents' house, where he began recording a series of emotional demos. These songs were originally intended to be heard only by McLamb's ex-girlfriend and a handful of friends, but the demos expanded into a full recording project.
Happy Birthday Solomon Burke! (b. March 21st, 1940) Burke is known as one of the founding fathers of soul music in the 1960's, helping shape the sound of rhythm and blues. Burke had a broad influence on rock music, and he was a favorite of many musicians. Mick jagger sang several of his songs on early Rolling Stones albums.
Winehouse performed 'You Know I'm No Good' at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony while in London, along with her hit single "Rehab". The performance was broadcast internationally via satellite. The song's performance on the awards ceremony subsequently led to an increase in digital downloads, notably on iTunes, where the song re-entered the Top Songs chart at number 55 in the United States. This resulted in a new peak for the song on the Billboard Hot 100, of number 77, one spot ahead of its previous peak. Arctic Monkeys performed a cover of the song on their 2007 tour.
After meeting members of Top Dawg Entertainment during the CMJ 2011, a friend attending the show with her foisted early SZA songs onto TDE president Terrence "Punch" Henderson, who liked the material and stayed in touch. Two years later, in June 2013, Top Dawg Entertainment announced they were planning to sign two more artists. On July 14, it was revealed Top Dawg had signed an upcoming female singer named SZA to the label; through this deal, SZA released Z (2014). Following the release of Z (2014), SZA began working on her debut and writing for other musicians including Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj, and Anti's opening track "Consideration" for Rihanna, which she featured on. However the debut album faced various setbacks, initially promised at the end of 2015, then at the start of 2016. In October 2016, she criticized her label for her album delays and stated she would be quitting.

"Electric Lady Sessions" is LCD Soundsystem's third live album. It was recorded over a three-day span at Electric Lady Studios in Manhattan, New York, during their American Dream Tour. The session featured a twelve-song setlist that included covers of songs by Heaven 17, Chic, and the Human League.
"Remind Me Tomorrow" was written while Van Etten was pregnant with her first child, attending school to obtain a degree in psychology and starring in the Netflix series The OA (2016) and making a cameo in Twin Peaks (2017).

Juan Maclean is a Brooklyn-based DJ and producer who has been a mainstay of the New York club scene, as well as maintaining a rigorous international touring schedule, since the release of his first records on DFA in 2002. After putting out an extensive catalogue of 12” singles and LPs for the label with vocalist Nancy Whang (most recently, 2014’s In A Dream LP, and this year’s 12” single ‘Can You Ever Really Know Somebody’), he returns to the label with ‘The Brighter The Light,’ a deep piano-based club track, augmented by three equally DJ-friendly remixes.

LA based The Dream Syndicate will be releasing a new album "These Times" on May 3rd!
Barnett had spent a year writing songs for her album but only showed them to her band a week before they were recorded in order to capture a "fresh" sound. The song "Pedestrian at Best" was written "at the last minute" and the recorded version was the first time that Barnett had sung the words out loud. The album was largely recorded over eight days in Melbourne in April 2014 but the release was delayed due to touring commitments. Some early promo copies were distributed in Europe in mid-December 2014, and Barnett unveiled the album at the 2015 South by Southwest music festival in March and then embarked on a world tour beginning in Paris.
By 2002, Yeah Yeah Yeahs had achieved a respected reputation for their live performances and critical acclaim for their debut EP, leading to several overtures from major record labels. The band wanted to finance their debut album themselves and chose to record at the low-budget Headgear Studio in Brooklyn. They produced it with Dave Sitek, a multi-instrumentalist and producer from the band TV on the Radio.
"Twentytwo In Blue" was co-produced by Matthew Molnar and Jacob Portrait (of Unknown Mortal Orchestra), recorded at Thump Studios by Jarvis Taveniere and mixed by Portrait.

For their debut album, The Strokes strived to capture a simple sound that was not significantly enhanced in the studio. Building on their 2001 EP "The Modern Age", the band members put together compositions largely through live takes during recording sessions, while songwriter and lead singer Julian Casablancas continued to detail the lives and relationships of urban youth.

'The Boxer' was released on this day in 1969! The folk rock ballad is about the struggles of overcoming isolation and poverty in NYC and a boxer who keeps fighting despite the pain.
A documentary film, titled "A Skin, A Night", was released in 2008. Focusing on the recording process of "Boxer", the film was directed by independent filmmaker Vincent Moon, and released in conjunction with a collection of b-sides, demos and live recordings, titled "The Virginia EP", on May 20, 2008.

On March 21, 2019, the Mariners played the Athletics at the Tokyo Dome and Ichiro played in his final professional game. Tommy Ramone, who had also worked to co-produce the album, was troubled by the lack of sales and began debating on continuing with the Ramones. He also considered touring to be "depressing", and that the audiences were rather unpleasant. The drummer left the band to continue on the album's writing and mixing.
