19-year-old Prince, joined by bassist André Cymone and drummer Bobby Z (who recently reunited with The Revolution) collaborated at a rehearsal spot in former manager Owen Husney's office in the Loring Park area of Minneapolis. These all instrumental jazz fusion tracks were split into 8 segments and allegedly completely improvised.

Prince lip-synched this song for promotion on The Midnight Special and American Bandstand. After an awkward interview with Dick Clark, Dick claimed out of 10,000 interviews with musicians Prince's was the most difficult mostly due to the artist giving single word answers. Two videos were made for this smash single. One where Prince ditched his iconic afro for silky locks, and wore provocative clothing singing solo in a black room with a microphone. The other was unreleased and fetured the rest of the band along with Prince. The video was pulled due to sexually suggestive themes.

Prince's name and success will forever be intermingled with his beginnings at First Ave. He appreciated the rock n' roll vibes, and that agents there didn't only book white acts. The venue also allowed Prince to do very short notice or surprise gigs, which allowed his musical career to truly come to life.

This was the first Prince album to associate the artist with the color purple as well as the first to use sensational spelling in his song titles, a trend that would continue through his career. This album showed Prince in a different light, toning down the explicit sexuality and adding in thoughts on topics such as religion and nuclear war. He'd also produced it, wrote it all with the exception of one track, and performed most of the instruments.

Kiss is the tenth track on Prince's eighth album Parade, the third to be credited to Prince and the Revolution, and, seven weeks before the album's release, Kiss was released as the album's first single worldwide. The single version contained a fade-out which was edited off the album version (to allow the song to segue directly into Anotherloverholenyohead). The song also featured in the movie Under The Cherry Moon.

Basic tracking took place on 28 April 1985 at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, California. The song was recorded initially by Prince as an acoustic blues-style demo for Mazarati, who were working in the studio next to Prince, with David Z. Rivkin and Brown Mark. Prince returned the following morning, and heard the version that Mazarati had recorded, which had transformed the song into a funk number. Prince instantly reclaimed the song, and worked on it further - he omitted a bass guitar part and the guitar solo and added the signature lick. Sir Casey Terry's vocals were also replaced with his own in a higher octave, but otherwise kept the original recording.
