This one is for Lori! "I wanted to send a request in today since it’s amplifier week and really, how could I not be an amplifier? My whole family listens to KEXP pretty much every day. KEXP plays such a big part in our lives. For years I’ve been running listening to John’s runner powered podcasts and they are sometimes the only thing that helps me keep motivated and inspired. Every afternoon I spend listen to Kevin Cole introduce new music and reignite my love of older tunes. We were introduced to IDLES on KEXP. My husband and I were lucky enough to go to the IDLES show a couple of weeks ago and the energy and the love at the show was life affirming! With everything that’s happening in the world right now one of my main resources for keeping me happy and grounded is listening to all the KEXP DJs and their endless enthusiasm for music and life. I could go on and on but I’m so happy to have KEXP in my life and my family’s life too. In a week or two I’m taking my son Angus to see Anderson Paak and that would have never happened if we hadn’t heard him on KEXP! Going to that show is my son’s big kick off to Summer and graduating from elementary school. I am a nurse and a busy Mom and your station helps me rejuvenate on my time off so I can give my best while at work. I can’t thank you all from the bottom of my heart and I am proud to support your station and everything you do. A request? Defender by Simian Mobile Disco….that song always reminds me of defending the ones I love"

Like most of Massive Attack's albums, the music often defies categorisation, ranging from R&B (title track and "Sly") to hip hop/rap ("Karmacoma" and "Eurochild") to reggae-tinged synthpop ("Spying Glass") to classical-influenced electronica instrumentals ("Weather Storm" and "Heat Miser").

Sex Pistols were an early influence for Joy Division!
...
This Saturday will be the 40th Anniversary of Joy Division's debut album "Unkown Pleasures" but we're celebrating today!
>br/>The album was recorded and mixed over three successive weekends at Stockport's Strawberry Studios in April 1979, and was produced by Martin Hannett, who incorporated a number of unconventional production techniques into the group's sound, including several AMS 15-80s digital delays, Marshall Time Modulators, tape echo and bounce, as well as the sound of a bottle smashing, someone eating crisps, backwards guitar and the sound of the Strawberry Studios lift with a Leslie speaker "whirring inside.” He also used the sound of a basement toilet.

This one is for Hawey!

"Can you please play XTC Making Plans for Nigel and dedicate it to Jake? I've been a KEXP (and KCMU) listener for 19 years -- I remember the moment I found that sound on the left end of the dial which played the music I lived for. I remember one all-nighter (and dayer probably) in the early 'noughts when I caught Larry Rose playing Fad Gadget. I remember streaming the early feed and telling my fiends about the station; to prove a point, I called in and asked Stevie Zoom to play the Minutemen -- which he did in that same set! Point made. KEXP has been part of my community and an important source for new and old music. I am always discovering new sounds and reliving old memories when classics hit the air. It's my soundtrack and my source for comfort and community -- a chance to feel connected even in the confines of the modern commuter-digital lifestyle. Thanks for what you do. Proud to be an amplifier and to also do a monthly matched donation through my employer."

Bernard Sumner (or Stephen Morris; accounts differ) found the haunting cover image in the Cambridge Encyclopaedia of Science. It's a Fourier analysis of the radio waves emitted by the Pulsar CP 1919, of course. A pulsar is the remnant after a dying sun collapses in on itself. Factory designer Peter Saville did the rest.

This one's for Lisa! >br/>
"Music has always been essential to my quality of life. When I was 13, I fell in love with so many incredible artists and music genres. Punk rock & 60s anti-establishment "hippy" music being a couple of those genres. Some may not see a connection between the two, but I think although the vehicle of the message is to the ear quite different, the intent is the same. 'We are restless & dissatisfied, the establishment is doing us wrong.' "Wake up & fight for change!" I entered into the magical, psychedelic, anarchist, poetic genius world that is The Doors and I was forever changed for the better. The Doors have been with me through many life changes and in my opinion are a crucial component to any great catharsis. These are indeed strange days we find ourselves in now. We all could benefit from the cathartic magic of The Doors and it's powerhouse of poetry" Thank you for these words Lisa!

This one's for Liz!

I've been an amplifier for several years and I just returned to Seattle last night from spending a month in my home country of Ireland. I missed my Seattle family & friends when I was there but I also missed KEXP!! With an 8 hour time difference, listening to Cheryl, John and Kevin was a rare event for the last 4 weeks. "I had a wonderful trip with my Irish family and friends, traveled all over the place, but I have to say the radio there did not compare! So I really missed you all. But what a perfect day to return to my daily listening, an all request day! Many thanks to you and all the amazing folks at KEXP, you are making my re-entry a little easier."

"My “little girl” is graduating from high school next week; getting ready for the next chapter of her life at Central Washington University. As I prepare the house for visiting family and guests, memories are flooding back of seeing her beautiful face for the first time, bringing home our first dog (Boomer), teaching her how to pick strawberries, sledding down our street in the snow and sleepovers with way-too-many little girls in our West Seattle bungalow. As a wee one, I’d sing her to sleep with Van Morrison’s “Crazy Love.” could you please work it into your set for this Almost-Empty-Nester-Emotional Mamma? ♥️ The wonderful DJ’s of KEXP have gotten me through the most amazingly beautiful and difficult things over the course of my daughter’s life and beyond; not being a KEXP Amplifier isn’t an option for our family." -Das

"My name is Matt, and our family are first time amplifiers as of this year. We use the amazing programming on KEXP to expose our entire family (8 kids) to music of all genres and share favorite tracks & artists. Hopefully, one of them will be a future KEXP artist! Can't begin to tell you how many smiles and living room dance parties we've had listening to the station. I'd like to request Amor Fati by Washed Out. Thank you for everything you do!"

Joy Division hated 'Unknown Pleasures’. "The production inflicted this dark, doomy mood over the album," said Sumner. "We'd drawn this picture in black and white, and Martin had coloured it in for us. We resented it." Everyone else loved it though, so, according to Sumner, "We swallowed our pride and went with it.”

"I've been a proud donor & amplifier of KEXP since 2003. I used to curate and coordinate a funky little festival at Camp Long in West Seattle called the Arts in Nature Festival. One year I booked a dream line-up and convinced Cloud Cult to play totally unplugged (their first time ever) in the Lodge, which is a super small, intimate and acoustic space. KEXP partnered with me on the performance, which wouldn't have happened without them. They captured the performance on video, which you can see on the KEXP Youtube channel. I can relive that performance over and over again. . . and it's magical every time. There's been 115,000 views of the performance since it happened! Check it out!" - Nancy

Joy Division didn't include the lyrics with 'Unknown Pleasures', to avoid being pinned down. "Our lyrics may mean something completely different to every single individual. You could hear one thing, the bloke next to you could hear something completely different," said Peter Hook. "We don't want to say anything. We don't want to influence people. We don't want people to know what we think."

"I was going to hold out on requesting, but my amplifier love week sticker came through the mail slot as PJ Daughter/It’s OK mashup came on (these amplifier requests are CRUSHING by the way). The universe is pulling out all the stops, so it’s time for me to step in with my bid. My intro to THATH was their studio session for Audioasis back in the Hannah Levin days, and it's been a trip to see how big they've gotten in the years since. I was really lucky to be in town a few weeks back when you had Charity, Matt, and Jonathan back in to play some stripped down arrangements from the current record. Seeing Charity go right in for the hug when she and her bandmates joined you in the live room felt so emblematic of KEXP's relationship with Seattle bands. Magic like that makes me hella proud to be a KEXP amplifier. What I give to KEXP pales in comparison to what y'all put back out into the world. Thanks so much for existing. Hope you can get this throwback off this Seattle band's debut on the show today!" - Jacqueline

Here's to you Ian! "hardly a day goes by that I don’t listen to @kexp for a few hours at least (often all day), and don’t either hear a new great song/artist or rediscover an old forgotten favorite. And I always learn something cool and/or interesting on the Afternoon Show. KEXP keeps me sane, engaged and happy, and I feel connected to the DJs and other listeners. I am proud to be a gold club amplifier - makes me feel good to give back to something that is an amazing and unique Seattle institution which so important to the community, and from which I personally derive so much value (so from that perspective, my monthly donation is an easy decision). So many great amplifier requested songs today - a testament to their collective great music taste. Almost decided to not make a request b/c it’s hard to do any better than everything that’s been requested all day."

Thanks for joining us today for Aplifier Request Day!
