"Fear of a Black Planet" features elaborate sound collages that incorporate varying rhythms, numerous samples, media sound bites, and eccentric loops, reflecting the songs' confrontational tone. Recorded during the golden age of hip hop, its assemblage of reconfigured and recontextualized aural sources preceded the sample clearance system that later emerged in the music industry. "Fear of a Black Planet" explores themes of organization and empowerment within the black community, social issues affecting African Americans, and race relations at the time. The record's criticism of institutional racism, white supremacy, and the power elite was partly inspired by Dr. Frances Cress Welsing's views on color.

'Straight Outta Compton' is the a single from N.W.A's debut album of the same name. The opening verse is rapped by Ice Cube. MC Ren delivers the second, and Eazy-E the third verse. Dr. Dre does the intro as well as introducing Eazy E's verse. The album reached triple platinum sales status, initially reaching platinum status with no airplay support and without any major tours.[3][8] As the hip hop community worldwide received the album with a high note, the members of N.W.A became the top stars for the emerging new era of gangsta rap while popularizing the lyrics of Ice Cube and MC Ren. The album also helped to spawn many young MCs and gangsta hip hop groups from areas such as Compton, California, and South Central Los Angeles, as many thought they had the same story to tell and the ability to pursue the career track that N.W.A had taken, hence the formation of groups such as Compton's Most Wanted.

The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy was an American hip-hop musical ensemble, active during the early 1990s.

The band was formed in 1990 by Michael Franti (vocals, production, misc. instruments) and Rono Tse (drums, percussion, programming), who had been in the Beatnigs.

The group was associated with contemporary bands, including House of Pain and Pop Will Eat Itself. They also were somewhat reminiscent of Gil Scott-Heron due to the half-spoken vocal styles of Franti and the up-front political messages in the music. The Disposable Heroes played many concerts, sometimes opening the bill for more well-known acts such as U2 (on their landmark Zoo TV Tour), Rage Against the Machine, Nirvana and Arrested Development. Guitarist Charlie Hunter made his recording debut with the Disposable Heroes before earning fame in jazz.

Skylab was the first space station launched and operated by NASA. Skylab was designed as an orbiting workshop for research on scientific matters. Unfortunately, NASA failed to build in any control mechanisms to return the orbiter to Earth. This presented a problem when NASA engineers discovered the station’s orbit was decaying rapidly. Skylab became a 77-ton loose cannon.

On July 11, 1979, Skylab began rapidly descending from orbit, engineers fired the station’s booster rockets, sending it into a tumble they hoped would bring it down in the Indian Ocean. They were close. While large chunks did go into the ocean, the space station’s debris littered in populated areas of western Australia. Fortunately, no one was injured.

Electric Light Orchestra dedicated their single "Don't Bring Me Down" to Skylab

On July 11, 2006, Thom Yorke of Radiohead released his debut solo album, "The Eraser". It was produced by longtime Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich and comprises of electronic music Yorke recorded during Radiohead's 2004 hiatus and between their 2005 rehearsals.

To generate ideas, Yorke cut and pasted clips at random from Radiohead's library of original samples, many of which were created on laptops in hotel rooms as the band toured. He would send fragments to Godrich, who identified passages that could become songs, edited them, and returned them to Yorke. The lyrics express Yorke's political concerns. Lead single "Harrowdown Hill" was written about the death of David Kelly, a whistleblower who allegedly committed suicide after telling a reporter that the British government had falsely identified weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

In 2016, a few months after she had competed in her second Olympic Trials, Grunewald’s ACC returned in the form of a four-pound tumor on her liver. A few months later, a PET scan revealed that Grunewald had twelve small tumors on her liver. As she began aggressive, but unsuccessful chemotherapy. Grunewald was sponsored by Brooks from 2010 until her death this year. Under the guidance of coach Dennis Barker, Gabe had hoped to compete in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. “From the very first day I was told I had cancer in 2009, I knew running would be a big part of my journey back to health. Gabe’s husband Justin posted this letter to Gabriel on Instagram on the day that she died. He had written and given it to her a few years prior:

Dear Gabriele, First, thank you. Thank you so much for showing me what it's like to be and feel alive. It's easy to pass through life day to day and punch a time card wishing away the hours. Currently although I don't always show it, I cherish every second. Whether we are out running, binging on a new Netflix series, or just lying in bed being lazy. Nothing beats the feeling I get when I see your smiling face. I know life is scary and I know we have won the lottery of uncertainty, and it's not fair, but I still choose our life of uncertainly and at times fear, over any alternative option I could think of. I have so much fun with you and have learned more from having you as my best friend and wife than I learned in the rest of my life combined. I know you have been given the heaviest of tasks in life. The task of being brave despite feeling enormous amounts of fear. The task of smiling when your throat wells up with pain and eyes want to fill with tears, but I don't think you were chosen by random chance, and again I know that's not fair but you are so amazing at being you and that's why I feel bravelikegabe is so special. Because there isn't a word in the dictionary for what you do or who you are. Brave flails in comparison to what you are to me and to so many people out there facing the simplest and silliest of struggles in day to day life. At the end of the day people won't remember the PRs run or the teams qualified for but they will remember that hard period in their life where they were losing hope but they found inspiration in a young lady who refuses to give up. I love you ❤️ #bravelikegabe #runningonhope

Grunewald came to embrace her role as an ambassador for rare cancer research, establishing her Brave Like Gabe foundation in 2018. It started as a hashtag, then as a prominent platform for the fight against types of cancer where lack of research meant that there were no FDA-approved treatments. In founding Brave Like Gabe, Grunewald strived to “raise awareness for rare diseases, the research funding disparities, and other challenges that prevent these cancers from having effective treatment options.” The foundation’s fundraising efforts support research and accelerate treatments for rare cancer patients.
