Produced by manager Chas Chandler, the song is a biographical story about Hendrix's childhood, and was recorded towards the end of the production cycle for Axis: Bold as Love. Hendrix's brother, Leon Hendrix, has commented that the lyrics allude to their father's alcoholism, Leon being taken away so suddenly by Child Protective Services without announcement, and the abusive relationship between their parents (or from stories told by their grandmother, who was half-Cherokee). bit.ly

Hatchie plays Barboza on September 28! Hatchie is the world of Harriette Pilbeam. Step inside her mind; a dreamy landscape where cascading synths, jangling guitars, propulsive rhythms and white noise undulate beneath irresistible pop melodies. Rather than focusing on the external world of her life in Brisbane, Pilbeam turns her gaze inwards, making a soundtrack out of her daydreams, setting her emotional life to song. bit.ly

Jay Som plays Neumos with Boy Scouts and Affectionately on Wednesday, September 18! Inspired by the lush, poppy sounds of 80s bands such as Prefab Sprout, the Cure, and Cocteau Twins -- as well as the ecstatic guitarwork of contemporary Vancouver band Weed -- her new album Anak Ko, meaning "My Child" in Filipino, sounds dazzlingly tactile, and firmly present. The result is a refreshingly precise sound. Duterte focused more on bass this time: “I just wanted to make a more groovy record,” she notes.

Kicking off the last day of Mixtape Week with a submission from Shawnna Multine, who writes, "This was the first mixed tape that I ever made. I was 8 years old and with the help of my 6 year old brother we recorded the Ramones songs off the TV with our tape recorder. I feel in love with the music of the Ramones, when I saw Rock N Roll High School for the first time. It was 1980 and the closet record store was 72 miles away. So we used what we had- a blank tape, a cassette recorder, and The Movie Channel guide. We waited for the next showing of the movie and held the cassette recorder to the TV speaker. So not only did we have Ramones songs we also had dialogue and sound effects from the movie. Side A was the Ramones , side B my brother and I telling stories with sound effects and a lot of giggling. We listened to this tape all summer long introducing the neighborhood to the Greatness that is the Ramones. We knew all the words to the songs and anytime I hear one of these songs in particular it takes me immediately back to that summer."
...
Another Ramones track from Shawnna Multine for KEXP's inaugural Mixtape Week, who recorded music from "Rock N Roll High School" off the TV with her younger brother when she was eight and he, six: "My brother and I no longer share the same musical taste, but 16 years later Joey Ramone played the Rock the Reservation Festival in our hometown of Tuba City AZ. We attended the show and laughed about how we came to love the Ramones."

This song, whose composition was credited to the band as a whole, was written by drummer Tommy Ramone (music and lyrics) and bassist Dee Dee Ramone (lyrics). Based on a simple three-chord pattern, "Blitzkrieg Bop" opens with the chant "Hey! Ho! Let's go!" The song is popular at sporting events where "Hey! Ho! Let's go!" is sometimes shouted as a rallying cry. "Blitzkrieg Bop" is number 92 on the Rolling Stone list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. bit.ly

From Hit Songs Deconstructed:

The short 0:08 intro instantly grabs your attention and hooks you into the song via its unique nature (drums + reverse vocal effect lead in on the repetitive lyrics “Gabba gabba we accept you, we accept you one of us!”)

Pinhead contains 3 verse sections within the song, all of which repeat in the same exact manner during each occurrence. This includes the melody AND lyrics!

Each verse vocal line consists of the same syllable count (10) and melody, making it exceptionally easy to get engrained within the listener’s head.

46% of the entire song is spent within the instrumental break sections. This is followed by the 23% spent within the outro and 20% within the verse.

Pinhead DOESN’T contain a chorus! bit.ly

Rocket to Russia is the third studio album by the Ramones, and was released on November 4, 1977, through Sire Records. Its origins date back to the summer of 1977, when "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker" was released as a single. That summer was known as the peak of the punk rock genre since many punk bands were offered recording contracts. The album's recording began in August 1977, and the band had a considerably larger budget with Sire allowing them $25,000 and $30,000; much of this money went toward the album's production rather than recording. bit.ly

This selection comes to us from listener Hazelle June Withers, who shares with us her mixtape entitled, "Once for Jacky, Now for Pluto": I made this mix for my friend, who I was secretly/not-so-secretly in love with, in high school for his 17th birthday. This mix was a way of revealing my love for him. However, he did not return my affections and stopped being my friend shortly after this CD was given. I really liked the music that I had chosen and the effort I put into it. So, a few months later, I thought, "screw him. I really like this mixtape and he didn't deserve a thoughtful gift anyway." So, It became re-dedicated to my beloved first car (a 1989 BMW) named Pluto and lived in its CD holder visor for many years.
...
This song comes from listener Hazelle June Withers' wonderful "Once for Jacky, Now for Pluto" mixtape, and has been described by singer Roland Orzabal thusly: "It is basically a romantic love song and one of the most simple tracks that Tears for Fears have ever recorded. It is a romance song that goes a bit perverse at the end."
...
This song found worthy inclusion in listener Hazelle June Withers' fantastic "Once for Jacky, Now for Pluto" mixtape. "Under the Milky Way" was written by Kilbey and Karin Jansson of Curious (Yelow). Kilbey and Jansson had become friends in 1983 and lived together in Australia from 1986. Kilbey said, "I smoked a joint and started playing the piano and she came in the room and we just made it up." According to a press release issued with Starfish, the title is from an Amsterdam music and cultural venue, Melkweg (Dutch for "Milky Way"), which Kilbey used to frequent. "Under the Milky Way" features a 12-string acoustic guitar melody along with a solo composed with an EBow on a Fender Jazzmaster, and recorded on a Synclavier, leading to a sound reminiscent of bagpipes. In October 1990 Jansson told John Tingwell of Drum Media about songwriting with Kilbey "it's a very spontaneous thing. It's not as if someone has put us together to write a hit song. It's more like sometimes when we write together, a song comes knocking on the door". bit.ly

Recorded at Hansa Tonstudio in what was then West Berlin, "Heroes" reflected the zeitgeist of the Cold War, symbolised by the divided city. Co-producer Tony Visconti considered it "one of my last great adventures in making albums. The studio was about 500 yards [460 metres] from the Berlin Wall. Red Guards would look into our control-room window with powerful binoculars."Earlier in 1977, Kraftwerk had name-checked Bowie on the title track of Trans-Europe Express, and he again paid tribute to his Krautrock influences: the title is a nod to the track "Hero" on the album Neu! '75 by the German band Neu! – whose guitarist Michael Rother had originally been approached to play on the album – while "V-2 Schneider" is inspired by and named after Kraftwerk's Florian Schneider. Despite the German influences, the album was recorded with Bowie's British and American collaborators, with no input from German musicians other than backing vocalist Antonia Maass. bit.ly

Alton Nehemiah Ellis (1938-2008) was a Jamaican singer-songwriter, and one of the innovators of rocksteady. He was, in fact, given the informal title "Godfather of Rocksteady, and in 2006, was inducted into the International Reggae And World Music Awards Hall Of Fame. Born in Trenchtown, Kingston, Jamaica, Ellis was raised within a musical family which included his older brothers Leslie [who performed as one of his back up singers and co-wrote some of his songs], and Irving [known as 'Niney'] who was a popular singer and steel pan player on Jamaica's North Coast. He learned to play the piano at a young age. bit.ly

Although the song was never released as a single, it is one of the band's signature songs. It received a Silver certification from the BPI for UK singles. It was written by Black Francis while he attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and was inspired by his experiences while scuba diving in the Caribbean. He later said he had "this very small fish trying to chase me. I don't know why—I don't know too much about fish behavior." bit.ly

In November 1977, the Buzzcocks were on a headline tour of the UK. Before a gig at the Clouds (aka the Cavendish Ballroom) in Edinburgh. They stayed in Edinburgh the night before. Pete Shelley later recalled: "We were in the Blenheim Guest House with pints of beer, sitting in the TV room half-watching Guys and Dolls. One of the characters, Adelaide, is saying to Marlon Brando's character, 'Wait till you fall in love with someone you shouldn't have.' "I thought, 'fallen in love with someone you shouldn't have?' Hmm, that's good." The following day Shelley wrote the lyrics of the song, in a van outside the main post office on nearby Waterloo Place. The music followed soon after. In an interview, Shelley said that the song was about a man named Francis Cookson that he lived with for about seven years. bit.ly

Electric Lady Sessions documents the conversation that unfolds among its members. Recorded in the famed New York studio of the same name, this session captures a moment of arresting chemistry among longtime collaborators who sound excited to be playing together again. On Electric Lady Sessions, LCD Soundsystem strip back and then bone up the grooves that have always made their music work, despite its contradictions. The groove takes precedence over the words, and Murphy gives his studio meticulousness over to the energy of the group. The synths run bright and juicy. The bass sounds like it could knock you out if you stood too close. The drums hit fast and sharp. Murphy slips from his throne as record-geek auteur and dissolves into the group—one musician among many, and better for it. bit.ly

This song finds its inclusion in a mixtape from Mark from San Francisco to Shannon from Arizona, who writes, "My friends teased me incessantly by referring to Mark only as Mixtape. Mark and I found ourselves communicating all day, every day. But alas, I knew nothing would come of it because I lived in Arizona and had no plans to move to SF. Meanwhile in SF, Mark’s friends were also teasing him about the mixtape! While I thought he made mixtapes for “all the girls,” it turned out that he had only made one...for me. And not only had I been the sole recipient, he had bought special equipment so he could record the mixtape using music he only had on vinyl. This is why he was avoiding me at Outside Lands the first two days - he was really nervous! It took about a year into dating for me to learn this fact."

"In May 2008, I celebrated my college graduation by visiting my dear friends in San Francisco. A couple of days into the trip - after attending a play in someone's garage about a sex demon (how I miss the pre-tech boom SF) - we went out to a bar where my friends played in a competitive skeeball league. There were some other players hanging out at the bar, including this guy named Mark. When the bar closed, the party moved to my friend's apartment where Mark and I found ourselves alone in the living room. He was kind and asked me how I had been spending my time in SF, where I replied that I had been doing a lot record shopping. Immediately Mark's eyes lit up and we dove into an intensive conversation about what bands we liked. While our music tastes can be represented as a Venn diagram, we discovered a shared love of Radiohead."
